Strawberries glowed like polished rubies on the delicate vines surrounding Endive. A wicker baket clutched under her arm, she made her way along the rows of ripe berries, plucking them one by one from the plants. Most other farms used machines to pick the fruit, but not her; Endive knew this was something to do by hand, to handle with care. As the basket grew fuller and fuller, Endive's smile widened. She had been farming these great fruits for years now, and had a certain fondness for their firetruck red color and glossy shine.
The sun beat down on her fur, but her skin remained cool, grateful for it's fuzzy guard. A trickle of sweat rolled down her muzzle, and a tender claw batted it away. Checking her watch, Endive noticed the picking for today was nearly done, as it was almost three o' clock. And three o' clock was pie time.
Everyday at exactly three, Endive busied herself in the kitchen, knotting her apron around her and ready to get her hands dirty, er...floury. She rolled out the paper-thin dough with extreme care and pressed it into the glass pan, scattering flour over the smooth bottom to keep from sticking. Cutting up the fragrant berries was always Endive's favorite part, as the heavenly scents filled her right up. She sliced the strawberries with perfection, clean even cuts dividing the produce in even quarters. Homemade filling is worked in with these gems, and then it's all deposited into the crust-covered pan. Another sheet of smooth dough is placed on top, and six slits are carved into the top. Without hesitation, Endive slid the pie into the oven, already tasting its splendid flavors.
All her efforts had passed a few hours, and the sun was just beginning to dip back below the inky black line of trees that overlook her precious crops. Deciding that an icy glass of fresh squeezed lemonade could do some good, Endive fetched the pitcher from the fridge and sloshed some into a pristine crystal glass. Carrying the drink outside, she sat back into the wooden porch chair and gazed out across her prided fields. Blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, and even that small patch of flourishing carrots spread out before her. Thoughts strayed to the grape vines out back, the watermelons plump and juicy nearby. Her produce was her joy.
The kitchen timer went off with the shrill humming that could only mean that her beloved pie was finished. Jumping up, she trotted onto the worn kitchen tile and retrieved the steaming pie from the oven. Golden brown with strawberry filling oozing out, she could have just eaten the thing right there. But knowing better, Endive set the pie on the windowsill just as the sun vanished, sending her crops into a twilit light, the soft glow of the moon illuminating the various fruits and vegetables. Turning away from the breathtaking scene, she decided to turn in early, like always, since she'd be up at five again, wandering those treasured fields looking for berries. Sighing contentedly, Endive breathed in one last gulp of strawberry-scented air, then headed up to her cozy bed.
