Johannes Cabal is a scientist who made a Faustian contract with the devil in order to gain power to learn about the laws of necromancy and gives Lucifer his soul in return for that knowledge.

Later on, Cabal wants his soul back as he tells Lucifer that him being soulless, is causing freak results in his experiments. He figures that the devil wont just hand him his soul back and offers to make a wager and the devil accepts on one term. If Cabal wants his soul back, he has to give Lucifer one hundred souls in return with a dead line, he must persuade people to sign over their souls within one year or he will be forever damned.

As Cabal accepts the deal, Lucifer gives him a traveling circus called, 'The Carnival of Discord' (which he later names, 'The World Renowned Cabal Bros. Carnival'), to help him out with Cabals task.

So, with what time he was given, Johannes raises a crew from the dead and his brother, Horst, a vampire (an unfortunate side effect of Johannes' early experiments with necromancy), and a few freaks as well. On the road, they encounter small problems but nothing this mastermind can handle. And even a little mayhem is thrown on the side.
