There are many legends surrounding the ancient and mysterious world of Subeta. The world we know was not always as it is now, and as old as Subeta is, hundreds of histories have been lost to the waves of time, pulled into it's mysterious tides and forgotten.

One such legend tells of a kingdom existing long before the world of Subeta was ever even known by that name, and a ruthless king who oppressed not only the peoples of the other nations across the world, but his own people as well. He ruled with fear, anger, and limitless power, expanding his kingdom and conquering nation after nation with his supreme military and his own personal might. Many said that the Evil King had been bestowed his power by dark forces, and others believed he was not human at all, but a living incarnation of malice and hatred. He silenced all those who opposed him with swift and deliberate judgement, put down all resistance to his tyrannical rule with hateful retribution, and whenever small factions attempted to rise up, he struck down insurgents with an iron blow.

In this age of darkness, hope grew scarce. The Evil King cared not for the welfare of his people, he craved only power, power over the entire world. But even in this age of darkness, the light of hope had not been snuffed out, however dimly it glowed. And brave warriors, young and old, from accross the world, banded together in an attempt to stop the Evil King. They would surely be put down as swiftly as all of those who had stood against him before, had it not been for a miracle. Seeing the state of the world, and the perseverance of the people who fought against the Evil King, the great Goddess bestowed her blessing upon the warriors who battled. The weapons they carried, and the clothing and armor they wore, were blessed with Divine wisdom and power, and those who wore the garments and carried the weapons carried with them the power and intelligence of the Goddess herself, and given the abilities needed to fight against the King of Evil whose malice and hatred strengthened him.

There were many warriors chosen, and the strength of their hearts glowed brightly as they marched toward battle with the great King of Evil. The battles were numerous, there was much bloodshed, and many of the chosen heroes fell, but the Goddess's chosen warriors did not lose hope, and they continued to fight, until finally, because of the strength of their hearts, the endowments of the Goddess, and the light of hope that burned within the hearts of the whole world to encourage them, they triumphed. The Evil King was at last struck down, and the Goddess's chosen warriors built a new kingdom, ruled with wisdom and compassion for all peoples, and the age that followed was one of prosperity and joy, the age of darkness in the world once called by another name was snuffed out, and the age of hope and peace began.

Schroeder was a treasure hunter, travelling the world of Subeta and learning of it's mysteries. The legend of the Age of Darkness was hardly known among the citizens of Subeta, but in his travels he had learned of the chosen warriors who had received the powers of the mysterious Goddess. He sought them now: the raiment of the warriors blessed with Divine wisdom and strength, and the weapons that struck down the King of Evil in days of old, before Subeta was ever called by that name.

On his travels, Schroeder had made more than a few enemies, for the ancient weapons and garments of the Goddess's chosen were known to some, and many of them had fallen into the hands of those who would abuse their power for personal gain and wealth. There came a day in his travels that Schroeder passed through a mountain trail, and was attacked by a band of thieves from whom he had taken one of the Holy Items. Though Schroeder had not recovered them all, and there were still many to find, he wore the clothes of one of the chosen heroes, and carried the sword of the same hero. With this power at his command, he was able to save himself from the thieves, but he knew that he could not outrun them forever, and more would come.

It was on this day that Schroeder passed through a peaceful, grassy trail, running through the mountains. Surrounded by the scent of nature and the cool breeze of Autumn, he settled down to rest from his travels, and to eat and recover strength. As he was resting, and enjoying the silence of nature and the breeze of the afternoon, he heard an anguished cry some distance away. Not knowing what it could be, he pulled his sword close and set off in the direction of the sound. Rounding a turn, he found a grassy field, and saw laying in the field the source of the sound: a lone Hikei filly with a wounded leg, crying in pain. As Schroeder approached the Hikei, she looked up in fear, but he met her eyes and she seemed to become calmer. Schroeder knelt beside her and examined the wounded leg: she had been shot by a hunter and managed to escape. Hunting Hikei was a barbaric occupation that no decent citizen would take; assuming the Hikei's wound had been the work of the disgraceful thieves who had chased him to the mountain pass where they had done battle, he decided to look after the creature, and though she cried out in pain and mistrust when he lifted her from the ground, still he persisted, and gently carried her back to where he had been resting, and bandaged her leg and gave her apples to eat. Soon the Hikei seemed to be more trusting of him, and when night fell, Schroeder put her by his campfire to keep her warm.

The Hikei awoke deep in the night to the sounds of swords clashing. Schroeder was backed against a mountain wall, and battling bravely against the thieves, but they had him vastly outnumbered. Hikei are intelligent and compassionate creatures, and seeing the person who had saved her and given her food and warmth in danger, she stood shakily, and though her leg was still bandaged and it pained her to move it, she lumbered and stumbled toward the battle. With a powerful slash that seemed to radiate Divine energy, Schroeder struck back all of the thieves, and they fall to the ground, stunned by this display of power. Schroeder fell to his knees, his breath heavy, weakened from the exertion of using the Divine weapon, the inner strength that he had summoned depleted, and his body weak. The thieves stood and gathered themselves, ready to strike down Schroeder and pilfer his treasures, but the Hikei stumbled forward and stood before them, a barrier between the ruffians and the tired man who had saved her young life.

The thieves laughed, and drew their swords and knives. Schroeder looked up and saw the brave Hikei standing between them, and though he wanted to call out to her to run, he could not speak. They charged forward and kicked at the Hikei to knock her down, but at that moment they were all of them blinded by a bright and inexplicable light that shone down from the sky and illuminated them all, so that every thief shut their eyes tightly, and neither Schroeder nor the Hikei could see a thing before them.

A loud voice spoke in the midst of them. "Child, rise."

Schroeder found himself able to stand, though the light was still so blinding he could not see a thing.

The voice spoke a second time. "There is much evil still in this world, and the power that I bestowed upon the Holy Items still resonates. Your quest to find them is noble, and you are given my blessing. Gather your strength, child, and I shall bestow upon you a companion to whom I bequeath my Divine blessing, and to whom I grant a small portion of my power."

The light began to fade, until it was a pillar of light focused around the Hikei, whose form Schroeder still could not see. The thieves lay on the ground, stunned and afraid, and unable to move.

The voice spoke again. "To this noble creature I give the power of the earth, the life of the earth's soil, the scent of the earth's fauna, the healing powers of the earth. Flora and fauna shall be given life by this power, and this creature shall be beloved by those creatures that meet her. Wherever she steps, the soil will produce abundant life, wherever she roams, the butterflies of the field and the small creatures of the forest will find refuge with her, and she will have the power to heal wounds, as you have done for her. I bestow upon this creature a name: Ixion, chosen of the Goddess, to embody compassion and love. This is my gift, and my blessing."

The pillar of light shone brightly once again, and Schroeder covered his eyes. When he opened them, he saw the Hikei standing before him, and on the ground where she stood, the grass was bright green and filled with life, flowers surrounded her hooves, and on her back were butterflies. Her leg had been healed, and her eyes shone with love for Schroeder, who had saved her. She turned to face the thieves, and with the leg that had so recently been wounded, she stomped her hoof to the ground, and the earth rose up and knocked the thieves backward into the path. In fear of all they'd seen and heard, the thieves screamed and ran down the path, away from Schroeder and the Hikei.

Schroeder approached her cautiously; she turned and trotted merrily toward him, and nestled her snout against his leg. He reached down and patted her gently, smiling. "Ixion, huh?" he asked her aloud. "Alright Ixion, we're partners now. You protect me, and I'll protect you."
