Everyone knows the tale of The Little Mermaid. No matter which version you hear, the basic plot is always the same: a mermaid princess falls in love with a human prince and trades her voice for a pair of legs. Thanks to this tale, little girls everywhere have dreamed of meeting or becoming a mermaid. No child has ever wished for this more than Clytie. Her love of the sea began when she was in kindergarten, after watching video about sea animals with her class. Since that day she constantly dreamed of living beneath the waves, away from her troubled life on land.
Clytie lived with her father in a tiny, run-down apartment near the edge of the city. She never knew her mother, who had died shortly after she was born. Her father did all he could to support them but over time the physical and emotional stress took its toll causing him to spiral into anger and apathy. Eventually, much of the money he made went towards booze and bimbos. What little was left was used for rent and whatever cheap food he could get on sale.
Holidays and birthdays were practically non-existent. When Clytie was little he would go to the dollar store and buy her some random toy without any real thought. As she got older he stopped "shopping" for her and just handed her some wadded up bill from his wallet. She actually preferred this as she was able to save for things she truly wanted, using her funds to fill her room with toys, figurines and posters in an attempt to give the illusion of being surrounded by the ocean and its denizens.
Clytie was a loner that avoided making any friends for fear of them learning of her father's scandalous lifestyle so she spent most of her days alone while her father worked then went bar-hopping. He didn't seem to care where his daughter spent her time so her afternoons were mostly spent wandering the various shops around town. She loved visiting the local pet shop and would stand in front of the giant saltwater tank imagining herself swimming among the clown fish, tangs, anemones and a seahorse she named Jewel.
BR>But the local library was Clytie's haven. Her sanctuary. In it there were no empty beer bottles, slurred speech nor obnoxious belching. Here, she could delve into realities far from her own. She would sit on one of the couches with a pile of books and magazines at her feet. It didn't matter if they were legends, fairy tales or an article in National Geographic. If she didn't feel like reading she would watch videos in the small TV room.
One particularly rainy afternoon, Clytie was seeking shelter in the library entryway when she noticed a rather colorful poster on the bulletin board. Dreamscapes: Learn to Paint Fantasy Environments read the swirling text surrounded by watercolor waves and clouds. She took a pen out of her backpack and excitedly jotted down the information on her arm. It took place at the community college every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoons but there was a $20 fee. Clytie felt her stomach turn a bit. She didn't have enough to pay it herself and she dreaded the thought of asking her cheapskate father.
At home, Clytie checked her savings. She was eight dollars short. Trying to ignore the sick feeling deep inside she entered the living room where he was drowsily watching the news.
"Um...,Daddy?" she said timidly.
He didn't look up. "Hm?"
"I'm sorry to bother you, but could I borrow some money for an art class?"
"How much?" he asked.
Clytie fidgeted nervously. "It's twenty dollars but I can-"
Before she could finish her request he took a swig of beer then hoisted himself out of his ragged recliner and lumbered to his bedroom. Clytie sighed. At least she tried.
As she was about to head back to her room her father returned and handed her a signed blank check.
"That's your birthday present this year." he said flatly as he plopped back down in his chair.
After getting over the initial shock, Clytie's face spread into a brilliant smile. She threw her arms around his neck gratefully, much to his surprise. The very next day Clytie ran to the college and excitedly signed up for the class.
A week later, Clytie sat on a stool in front of the blank canvas. A tall, slender woman strolled into the room carrying a folder and case filled with art supplies. Her long, wavy red hair cascaded down her back and stopped at her waist and her cerulean eyes seemed to sparkle with an inner light. She wore a loose green tunic top and an ankle-length bohemian-style skirt over her sandaled feet. She was a free spirit if ever there was one. But it was her necklace that caught Clytie's eye. Even from a distance she could make out the sea glass beads on either side of a small seashell pendant with some kind of symbol etched into it then filled in with turquoise paint. Clytie couldn't help but feel envious that she didn't own such a beautiful piece of jewelry.
"Good morning, everyone!" the teacher practically sang. "I'm Thalassa! I know that's a bit of a mouthful so just call me Thally, ok?" Her crimson lips curved into a playful smile. "Now, the first assignment is simple:
Students were to paint or draw whatever they liked so that Thally could get a feel for their styles and personalities. Clytie wasted no time in grabbing her brush and sweeping a mixture of blue, green and white paint across her canvas, creating swirls and waves. She could almost hear the rushing of the water in her ears as her ocean gradually overtook the canvas. Next, she added the coral, the fish, some kelp framing the sides and the dark silhouette of a humpback whale pod in the distance. Finally, it was time for the focal point of the piece.
