Once, long ago, there were four Guardians who watched over the Crystal Shrines. Each held their own crystals that reacted in tandem with their larger counterpart. Until one by one, the Crystal Shrines were attacked by terrible Fiends, and their brilliant lights went out. The Guardians fled, unable to protect the shrine or defend themselves.
At least that's how Kirrian's grandmother told it. She also would drone on and on about how that very crystal had been in their family for generations, and that her great grandfather was the last Guardian of the Earth Shrine before the Fiends came and destroyed everything. Hard to believe really, it was just a boring odd coloured emerald. What could it possible have in common with the dead Earth Crystal located on a completely different continent.

"Welcome, travelers. I am told you carry crystals. Is this true?" The King looked at them all hopefully and full of smiles. They all nodded, too shocked to speak. The King looked to his Chancellor and nodded. "Then it's just as Lukahn's prophecy foretold: "When darkness veils the world, four warriors of light shall come." Kirrian couldn't believe his ears. Some ancient prophecy barely glanced over in class was real? Something about four warriors and a creature made of chaos. They had perished, but some story about them and the stones they carried had stayed. And he held one of those stones?! His grandmother, as crazy as she was, was right about her Guardian story. It was too much. The amount of responsibility that now rested on their shoulders was heavy. He wondered if the other three knew what exactly they were getting into.

--------

Two days on the road towards the ruined castle and Kirrian was getting irritable. They were tasked with saving the princess Sarah by the king, and the others were treating this as little more than a fun trip! They needed to take things more seriously.
The group had made camp, even though they could see the castle from here. Kirrian sat opposite the other three, keeping his distance. "Do any of you realize the importance of these crystals? What it means?"
Matias clearly didn't like Kirrian, and he knew how to push buttons. "Of course we do, mage. Just because we didn't get into some prestigious magic school, doesn't mean we didn't learn about the dumb prophecy."
Kirrian was about to give him some choice words about 'stupid theif' and 'gutter rat' when Roman raised his hands to stop the fight. "Enough. Mat, chill out. We all know what this quest means and the importance of it, and the only way we are going to finish it is if we learn to get along." Roman was the only sensible one of the group, always eager to please and the voice of reason.
As much as Kirrian hated to admit it, he was right. "So, how was everyone's schooling before life got crazy?"

--------

Traveling across the ocean made Kirrian realize a few things about himself and his travelling companions. Being stuck on a small ship for days on end with no real way of finding an 'alone' space gets on your nerves; and those nosy pirates are everywhere. And finding out that he gets seasick was definitely a hateful experience. But the most important thing Kirrian found out was that Dean, Roman, and Matias were all guys he could count on to watch his back, even if they started off just tolerating Kirrian; or hating at first. The other three had already known each other for a while before meeting the King of Cornelia. And it took Kirrian saving their lives and one crappy boat ride later for them to realize that mages aren't so bad.
"We're almost to the town of Melmond." Dean came over and joined Kirrian near the bow of the ship, who still looked a little green around the edges. The news was music to his ears.
"Oh thank the Light. I can't wait to get off this terrible boat. You guys are all starting to smell." Kirrian grinned at his own joke, trying his hardest to take his mind off the swaying seas. It wasn't working very well.
Dean chuckled. "Hang in there Kirrian, you'll see land soon enough." As if his words were magic, a tiny speck of land rose above the horizon. Melmond was finally in sight. "And I don't stink. I smell like a bouquet of roses, it's obviously you who smells." The monk gave him a friendly shoulder jab.
"First Melmond. Then the Earth Shrine."

--------

Their journey took them all over the known world. Through a deep cave to kill the Lich, inside a volcano to find Marilith, deep underwater to slay the Kraken, and nearly getting lost in a desert to find the Mirage Tower and kill Tiamat who hid on a floating castle. But in the end it wasn't enough. After restoring all the crystals power, their energy began to funnel away. Toward the ruined castle they first defeated Garland at. It came as a shock at first, but all agreed travelling back to Lufenia and asking about the prophecy was a good idea.
There they learned that the castle held a crystal that allowed anyone to travel back in time. None of them really understood what it meant, although they did understand they were not strong enough to fight anything on the other side. The four were tired, the Fiends had taken their toll on them all. And they definitely didn't have the time to go back home and request training. They needed a miracle.

The Lufenians held a vast amount of knowledge in their libraries and were happy to help. They told the group about a series of islands inhabited by dragons; by Bahamut. A legendary dragon who lived before the arrival of the Fiends, and had the ability to grant those worthy immense power. They all agreed they should risk finding Bahamut and these islands.
"So where do you think the island is Roman?" Matias gripped the steering wheel of the airship tightly, waiting for directions on where to go.
Roman leaned over the map and pointed to a section of ocean dotted with tiny uninhabited islands too small for anyone to make a home. "Here seems the most likely place. It's out of the way and no shipping lanes even come close to it. It's as if the merchants avoid this area as if forced to. We should check here first." He stuck a pin into the largest of the tiny islands.
"And if they aren't there?" Kirrian asked, clearly anxious.
"Then we check them all, no matter how long it takes."

--------

Turned out all the islands where homes to dragons this whole time. Each had near expertly hidden caves tunneling down into the rock to then transform into amazing open caverns that they called home. So Roman was correct in thinking Bahamut would be found on the largest of the islands, for here they stood in front of the legendary dragon with a feeling of awe, and triumph.
"Welcome Warriors. I have been expecting you here for a long time. I know what which you seek.” Bahamut watched them knowingly. It made Kirrian a little nervous, as if the dragon knew something he did not. “If you want the power to save the planet, then you must travel to the Citadel of Trials and complete the tasks presented before you and bring me proof of your deeds, and I will grant it to you.”
Matias grinned excitedly. “Then what are we waiting for, let’s get going.”
The dragon halted them with a flourish of his wings. “Do not take this task so lightly, thief. You each will be faced with a foe no others can help you with. This is a task for man to test his strength, and one of you cannot enter it’s doors.” Bahamut motioned toward Kirrian specifically. He paled with fear, knowing exactly what the dragon meant. Dean looked over when Kirrian wasn’t confused like the rest of them. “Kirrian? Is there something wrong? Do you... understand what Bahamut means?” Panic began to set in. He had been so careful during their travels! And all it took was some know-it-all dragon to ruin it. Kirrian was not prepared for this to happen.
“It is true ... Kirrian cannot join you on this journey. She has a different task ahead of her.” No no nononono! They were going to hate him now! This was the end, there was nothing he could do.
Matias looked at Kirrian accusingly. “Did he just say ‘she’? Kirrian, is Bahamut saying you’re a girl?” From the looks on their faces, Kirrian knew he - no, that she had at least fooled them all this whole time.
“Y-you have to understand, I had to lie. They don’t let women into the black and red mage schools.” Everyone knew that, women were only allowed into the white mage school because of some stupid archaic rule. “I had to…”
The other three glanced among each other, a silent conversation. Matias was about to say something, closed his mouth and just shrugged, grumbling toward the cave entrance. Roman didn’t seem to mind, but he was never judgmental. “Makes sense now I guess. I mean, you did do weird things before.” Kirrian let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding, though she was still extremely nervous.
Dean on the other hand, seemed to take the news a little harder and didn’t want to make eye contact. “Your gender doesn’t change the fact you are a formidable mage.”
Feeling relieved they didn’t hate her, Kirrian stepped up to Bahamut. “You guys had best go to the Citadel of Trials then.” Once they left, Kirrian was alone with Bahamut, and she had to teach this dragon a lesson about blowing someone’s cover.

Exhausted and wounded, the group rested near the portal back to their own timeline. It was an arduous journey on this side, eliminating all four Fiends again and then facing Garland-turned-Chaos was a challenge. But they did it. They were able to break the time loop and save the world from him. Now that they were here, finished, they weren't sure how to take the next step.
"So, what now?" Matias hovered over the orb. "Activate this, then go home?"
Roman sighed. "Seems almost boring to go back to a normal life after all this. I was training to be a castle guard before, and now? ... I don't know, maybe." Dean and Matias nodded, agreeing that life wasn't going to be the same again.
But Kirrian shook her head. "It's not going to wont work like that. Once we go through that portal to return home, we wont remember anything that has happened these past few months."
"Wait... what? But why?" Matias wasn't the only one confused, they all were.
Kirrian didn't want to burst their bubble, but it was better this way. "This is a time loop, so we've done this who knows how many times, and failed. Those times we failed, Garland was able to continuously send the Fiends to our time, and each time we end up here and die. Only this time something was different."
Dean folded his arms in front of himself. "We won this time, so no more time loop."
"Exactly! So once we go home, none of this would have ever happened, none of us had to come here in the first place. We. Wont. Remember." The last bit seemed to sink in for everyone, and it grew quiet for a while.
Roman decided to break the silence. "It was worth it though, right? Because of the things we've done, the world will be a safer place now." Always the optimist, but it did make sense to the rest. It was worth it.
Though Kirrian couldn't help feeling a little disappointed that she wouldn't be friends with these guys anymore. One by one each pressed their hand to the orb that would send them back to their timeline. Before Dean touched it though, Kirrian grabbed his arm. "Kira."
He turned to face her. "What?"
"My name. It's Kira."
Dean smiled. "I know."
"But... How?" Kirrian was baffled.
"I knew your brother a bit before he vanished years ago. Once you showed up as him I thought he had just come back, just different. But when Bahamut said you weren't a guy, I knew you must be Kira. He had mentioned he had a twin sister once. I just waited for you to tell me, just... didn't think it would take this long." He shrugged. "Shall we go?"
Kirrian didn't want to go back, tears threatened to run down her face. "I don't want to forget you."
Dean grabbed her face in his hands to make her look at him in the eyes. "I don't want to either, but I believe that time will correct itself, and that we will be friends again."
She had to believe that too. "Okay." Kirrian held out her hand for Dean to take, and together they touched the orb and went back home.

And then they forgot.
