GumMinty watches people. It's sort of his thing. There's just so much to see, even at a first glance - their expression, their clothes, what secrets may lurk under a plastic smile or a carefully selected outfit. It's so much easier to understand people by looking instead of talking, so why change? He's never been much of a talker in the first place. No, that title goes to Gum. The pink-haired man could talk for hours if he was allowed to, rambles that went nowhere but were tinged with intrigue and paranoia.

He loves listening to Gum, whatever the subject. Though, come to think of it, he loves a lot of things about Gum. The way the other man fiddles with his hair when he's lying, how he can never seem to hold down a job but is never lacking for work, how he smiles. It's a nice smile. Minty's favorite smile, though he's never told anyone that.

It's sort of strange, how different they are, he thinks as he watches his friend. Gum is chattering happily away, organizing a thick stack of vinyls for the umpteenth time. It seems this time it's alphabetical order, and Minty has to lean over every now and then to correct a mistake. Every time he does so, Gum smiles at him, and Minty wishes he could smile back. He does try, really, but the most he can usually manage is a brief twitch in the corner of his lips, not nearly as bright as the toothy grin Gum effortlessly produces. Gum understands anyway, though, he always notices the little changes.

They've known each other for years, and perhaps that's why they can read each other, though Minty is certainly more skilled at predicting the moods and problems of his friend. Gum is always a bit too wrapped up in himself to fully understand Minty. But the green-haired man has always been the more stable one, that's understood. As the tangent goes deeper into almost untraceable thoughts, Minty's mind wanders, remembering.

The first time they met, stupid kids both running from the police, Gum laughing so hard the whole way that Minty was worried that he'd bust a lung. The first time they'd lit up together, which wasn't that long after they'd met. The first time they'd tried new things, bent the rules, blurred the lines and confused the hell out of themselves. They were friends, but certainly weren't shy physically, sharing cigarettes and kisses. It was a strange relationship. Relationship, another vague word, and the philosopher under his skin screamed, it was far too impersonal for what they had.

But he still had no idea what they were. Even after Gum had said "I love you". Or, rather, put up a hypothetical question, which they'd gotten into a debate over, which had ended in Gum flouncing away because Minty couldn't stop asking clarifying questions that his friend couldn't (or wouldn't) answer. They still hadn't talked about it afterward, though sometimes, when the one-sided conversation lagged, Gum looked on the brink of bringing it up. The green-haired man was fine with letting it go, for now, he was far too happy with the way things were to worry about what they could be.

Everything was fine now. Colors bled together, like a white canvas being stained by shades of green and pink. His head ached, the last of the smoke slipped between his teeth, and as he came down, he wondered if the both of them would ever come up with an ending that made even a little sense. The remnants of his sanity said no. The green-tinted smoke that filtered through his veins assured him that it would all be fine, fine, fine.

"What are you thinking about?" Asked Gum, clutching a cracked record.

"Nothing." Minty replied, mind slowly going blissfully blank.
