"You're like a friend to me, Rhodium, you're special," he would say, as he hammered in some bolts into another creation of his. "No other creation of mine is like you at all. You live."
Rhodium had never understood what he had meant at that time; all the other creatures that his creator built from metal 'lived', in a way. They operated, walked along on their metal feet, some could even fly. But Rhodium was the only one out of all of them that could feel like an animal. He did not breathe, nor did he eat, but he somehow felt the friendship between himself and his creator like no other robotic creature did. Robots weren't supposed to feel, were they?
When confronted about this, his creator would avoid his questions and try to divert his attention, but Rhodium stuck to his instincts and continued to ask for years, until finally...his creator opened up completely to him.
"You are the only Steamwork creature who can feel because I placed a Rhodium ring inside of you all those years ago, that in my experiments became very special. It gave you a heart of sorts. The metal casing that represents your heart contains the ring, suspended in fluid and glowing ever brightly. You live like an animal. You are the only one."

Rhodium is one of the rarest precious metals, existing as a member of the platinum group. It is very expensive and is often used to create many things including jewellery; particularly rings.
