Stumpy is a sweetheart. Though he comes from a long line of great predators, he does not like to kill anything. He does not eat any meat, and his favorite food is cheese. Of course, this does not sit well with his family.
They just do not understand him.
One day, his father had had enough and ordered him to catch a mouse and eat it. His father took him down to an old barn where he had eaten quite a few mice himself.
The whole trip there, Stumpy was dreading the idea of killing a mouse. He hated the thought of it, but he knew if he let his father down, there would be a price to pay.
Stumpy was hoping they would not see a mouse, but sure enough, one came scurrying out in plain sight. His father spotted it and told Stumpy to go get it.
Stumpy did as his father asked and caught it. Once the mouse was in his paws, it started pleading. "Please don't eat me! I am pregnant.†Stumpy could not eat the mouse after hearing this, so he pretended to stuff the whole mouse in his mouth and growled at his father to back off, as if to say, “This is my meal.†His father was so proud and walked off.
After his father left, Stumpy spit out the mouse, but she had fainted. Carefully gathering the pregnant mouse, he put her in a bathtub to rest. When she awoke, he fed her and gave her water. He apologized for stuffing her into his mouth, explaining that he was just acting to get his father off his back. The mouse – whose name was Sarah – expressed gratitude for his act, which had saved her and her children’s lives.
He told her he would love to bring her food and water, so that she would not have to get it herself, since the barn was a dangerous place to come out in, as it was frequently the cats’ hunting grounds. She agreed and he continued to bring her food and water until she had her babies.
She had three of them and he continued helping her out with food and water even after they were born. Seeing the babies and having daily conversations with Sarah, Stumpy loved his new little family.
Stumpy’s mother had always told him if he kept eating cheese as much as he did that he would turn into a mouse; maybe she was right!
