There are two ancient tribes specialized in voodoo and witch doctery living in a desolated part of Africa. Each year there are about three to five children born in each tribe. All of the members of each tribe wear an animal name.
Once a year these two tribes come together and hold a huge feast, a feast where the children are also presented to each other. The children with the animal names that match the most, are typically matched to marry. The children have no choice in this.
When there are two children matching exceptionally (as was the case with Python and Cobra), they are treated exceptionally well when it comes to food, benefits and education in the ways of witch doctery. When they turn fourteen years old, they are, in our words, 'married' when the tribe comes back together that year.
As soon as they turn 18, their ultimate test of 'perfection' is to have a child within the following year. And they did, her name was Anaconda. The passing of this test gives them to right to be the leader of each of their tribe. This also means that they do not see each other anymore except for once a year. And the child is passed on between each tribe every year, to perfect his or her education and to optimize his or her knowledge. By educating the child this way, it is almost sure that he or she will know everything there is to know about witch doctery, since the knowledge of the two tribes will be shared.
This kind of rite has not happened in many many hundreds of years between the tribes. Anaconda is only seven, but she is believed to be the ultimate leader and both tribes (who, for ancient reasons, do not merge together) hope to have her on their side when she turns fourteen. Anaconda will be able to pick her own partner if she wishes to do so, but she can remain single as well.
