The Story of Knives
Mr. and Mrs. Carver had spent a great deal of their first years of marriage in complete and blissful love. When Mrs. carver found she was pregnant... Things soon took a down hill spiral. It wasn't that they hadn't wanted a child.. It was the fact that it was too soon for the both of them. They were worried for months. However, days become confusing enough without the thought of a child... The ninth month came too quickly for them both. And on October Thirteenth, nineteen-eighty, their son was born. In keeping with tradition, they'd picked a name that would fit well with their last name. And so Jackknifed was bestowed upon the boy. He was an evil little child. Not at first of course. As babies are so innocent and all. Eventually evil had consumed him when he'd turned ten, and so he was banished from the village. But, he'd grown into a monstrous thing. He had threatened to return and claim the village as his own... And so he did just that. He now tormented the very souls of the village. Especially those of his mother and father... Whom he hated for letting this happen to him.

A full fled vampire bat born into a village that had so despised an evil presence. Mr. and Mrs. Carver had spent the first few years of their marriage in complete love. Oh? Does this sound familiar? Well I can tell you now... This is not what you believe it to be... Continue to read, and perhaps you will understand. When the misses found out they were to have a son, the chief of their village spoke with them. A shaman had told them how they could seal away the entity into a pure soul. One that hadn't been tainted of evil yet. A baby is a precious thing, and, it being a baby would not be blackened by the harsh world. "And so... We feel it best if your son were to be the one to trap him in." The Chief had said. Naturally, Mrs. Carver was against the idea. The Chief simply sighed and left. The Carvers spent a great deal of the next few months speaking about the arrangement... Could they really give up their only son to bear the weight of such a cruel malicious being? That ninth month bit them like a spider-bite when it rolled around. The baby was born, and the name Jackknifed was given to him. This sounds familiar again, doesn't it? However there's more going on here than you think.

Jackknifed lived with his mother and father and was a happy baby. One summer evening he was out watching his father work when he'd heard a noise he'd never come across before. He tugged on his father's shirt. "Dayee... tha?" He asked innocently. Mr. Carver stopped and looked down at his son, "That was a gun shot." It was then he'd noticed the hole that seemed to have formed out of no where in his son's ear. He picked him up, "Does it hurt?" Jackknifed only blinked. His father sighed in relief. At least he hadn't felt it. He rushed him to the Shaman in the town. The Shaman only shook his head, "There is nothing I can do to fix that.. But it's a clean hole. If you rinse it with water... It should be fine." Mr. Carver contemplated this, then went back home, where Mrs. Carver was none too pleased. Lots of bat squeaks were made and a few curses were thrown in there too. Finally Mrs. Carver just sighed and said, "Well at least it wasn't deadly..." Mr. Carver nodded, "I think I know how to fix this though... It might sting a bit... But it will be worth it." He said and took Knives back in his arms then led him to his workshop. Once there he took a small rivet and placed it in the hole in his son's ear. Jackknifed screamed in protest as the cold metal met the bloodied ring of his ear. Mr. Carver quickly made a make-shift clamp to hold the bud in place. Jackknifed yowled again, tears streaming his small face as the ear piece was touched. Mr. Carver had really not wanted to do this... But found it the only way to keep the hole from getting worse. It pained him. He carried his son upstairs and his wife looked at him, then at Jackknifed, who was still sniffling. She took him from her husband and brought him upstairs to rest.

It was a few days later that the Shaman and the Chief of the village went to the Carver's house. The Chief explained that it would be a good idea to get rid of the evil entity soon. "Tomorrow then." The Chief said. Mrs. Carver's heart sunk. Mr. Carver tried his best to comfort her, but it did no good. The next day, Mrs. Carver spent a great deal of time with her son. Mr. Carver had to work, he didn't want to... He had to. If he didn't it meant no food, and that was something the family needed. For in those days they didn't just go out and hunt as they believed the blood to be poisoned and must be sent to special plants to get treated. When the time came, Mrs. Carver brought her son to the stadium where the "trapping" would take place. Jackknifed was held in his mother's arms the whole way. When a lady approached them and said, "Mrs. Carver... I'm afraid it's time." Her heart sunk further, and she held her son closer to her, as any protective mother would. The Chief stood next to the woman and Mrs. Carver, though regretting it, handed Jackknifed to them. Jackknifed squealed reaching for his mom as tears streamed down her face. He was confused, all he wanted was to go back home with his mom and dad. The Chief led him to a platform. The Shaman was already starting to work on the spell that would entrap the evil within Jackknifed. It seemed like just about every bat in town, apart from those like his father that had to work, was there. He sat in the middle of the platform, frantically looking around for his mother. The Shaman finished saying the words, and evil was sent into Jackknifed. Tears filled his eyes as they flickered yellow and red slitted to normal and back again. And the pain, it was worse than anything his tiny body should have been able to withstand. He screeched in pain. "Moyeee!!!" He called. But he couldn't see her, blinded by the dark entity that was consuming him. His mother rushed forward and took him in her arms hugging him and telling him that it would be ok, even though she herself didn't know if it would be. After the event Jackknifed cried for days. The evil it seemed had wrapped around his very heart.

He started school, like every child. But he'd have these episodes. The first one started in class. The teacher had asked a question, and like most schools you had to raise your hand to be called on. It was on accident of course, but somehow Jackknifed's ears were touched. His eyes went yellow and the red slits appeared. He looked at his teacher, clearly not interested in the children in the room. After all, the entity was a fair sum older than Jackknifed and so, had different desires. The young bat marched up to his teacher and took her hand in his, "Such a pretty lady... Would you care to dance?" The voice that came from Jackknifed was not his own. It had a certain seductiveness to it. His teacher closed her eyes, "Jackknifed... That is NOT how children are supposed to act. Now please, sit down or I'll have to send you to the Principal's Office. Jackknifed looked at her curiously. She had called him by name. This only enticed him further, "But kitten... Please, all I ask is for one dance." The other children just gave him funny looks. The teacher grabbed his wrist and half dragged half walked him to the Principal's Office. By then the entity had gone and Jackknifed was back to normal. He was shaken, not used to being controlled like that... And so began to cry. His mother and father had to take him home. He was brought back to school a few days later. Jackknifed walked into the classroom, the children gathered around him:

Jackknifed Carver went to school
Loved his teacher like a fool
All the girls were so confused
We all know he's got loose screws~

Jackknifed backed away from them. He ran through the doors of the school and into his mother's arms. It was then that the family knew they'd have to move. It was obvious they couldn't stay where their son might later on get physical harm brought upon him. They took the few belongings they had and moved to a quieter place. Where no one knew of the evil that lurked beneath Jackknifed's skin. He still didn't want to go to school... Afraid that everyone would treat him the same. He moped around the house, even as young as he was, and it seemed he had gone mute. It was bad enough having something vile in him, but to have children his age, that were his friends, mock him... That was worse.

There was another bat family that lived across the street. They had a girl, and it was on a Saturday like any other that she was outside, collecting the rocks that sparkled in the sunlight. Knives was in his house, quietly watching tv when a glint of light shone through the window. Curiosity got him, and he jumped onto the window sill and peered outside. It was then that the girl's mother walked outside and told her to go in the house. Her ears dropped, but she obeyed. Later that evening, like any good neighbor, the girl and her family went over to the Carver's house. They knocked on the door and Mrs. Carver invited them in. Jackknifed was in his room. His mother called him, and he got halfway down the stairs, then ran back up them again out of sight. The girl dashed up the stairs after him, and opened the door to his room. "You don't have to be scared." She said. He was sitting on his bed, knees tucked to his chin with his arms on his knees and his head resting on his arms. His tail was curled at his side, and his wings were draped around him like curtains. He didn't even look up when she walked in. "I'm not gonna hurt you." She walked over and sat on the bed next to him. "I'm Zay." She said. He didn't move; obviously not liking her presence. She thought for a moment, then poked him in the side. He shifted a bit; but still said nothing. "What's your name?" His mother walked in the room, "I'm afraid Jackknifed doesn't talk, dear." Zay looked at her confused. "Can I just call him Knives... Jackknifed's too long." It never occurred to his mother to call him that. It seemed like a much better idea than what they'd originally called him. Especially... Since their first child was named the exact same. She gave a small nod, "If you want to." Zay looked over at him, "Yup, I'mma call you Knives." She smiled at him. His mother left the room, she'd only meant to check on Knives and make sure he was ok. There was a slight hint of a smile playing on the boy's face when she'd said that. But the remnants of it vanished before Zay could take notice.

It was sunny out, it was fall now. Zay was nine and Knives was ten. They'd been outside running through piles of leaves. Zay pulled a stray leaf out of her hair and tickled his nose with it. His nose wiggled at the touch. Zay giggled as his ears began to twitch too. They'd done that before, Zay's had also. However, Zay was feeling particularly ornery and reached to touch them. Knives grabbed her wrists and shook his head, "No." She stared at him. That was the first time he'd spoken since she'd known him. She was about to call for his mom, when Knives had the sudden compulsion to kiss her. Zay's ears perked and her face grew warm. Knives' face was beet red too, he just looked at her. That was the first time she'd ever been kissed, and she also knew that it meant that she was not to tell his mother that he could speak. Zay didn't run off, she just stood there a minute thinking. Knives' mom came outside, "What are you two doing?" Knives immediately dropped Zay's wrists. "Uhm... We were playing tag... And uhm... I'm it now." Zay said. Knives nodded in agreement. His mother shook her head, "Well, you two've gotta be hungry... Come on in and I'll make you a snack." The duo shrugged and did so.

All of this secrecy was like a game to Zay. She wouldn't dare tell anyone. Knives would explain things to her that he'd never dare tell anyone else. Like how he'd found the rattle snake down by the pond. Or how he accidentally chipped one of his teeth when he promised his mom he'd be careful. Zay didn't understand why he didn't talk before, it's not like his voice was annoying. It was almost mesmerizing. But it also seemed like there was a haunting shallow sound that Zay couldn't quite pick up on. It was sad, but a little sadistic, maybe. She wasn't sure. And she didn't want to press the issue for fear that he'd stop talking to her. "How come I'm not allowed to touch your ears?" She asked. She didn't even know why she'd asked it, it just sort of slipped out. Knives flattened his ears to his head. "Why?" "Because silly, I wanna know." She replied. He sighed, unsure how to answer. He didn't want that rhyme to start in his head, like it did every night he went to sleep. It was like some voice was repeating it over and over in his mind. "I just... Don't like people messing with them..." He finally said. Zay gave a small nod. "Oh, ok..." She didn't really believe it. Knives didn't know it yet, but Zay was planning on touching his ears. She wanted to know why he was so sad all the time. She had this need to know.

Knives never did go back to school, but Zay taught him about what she'd learned. It soon was that time of night, where Zay had to go home. She hugged him and walked across the street. He watched her go, an aching swelling in his chest. He shoved it aside, and walked in the house. He didn't like this feeling of hurt.He climbed the stairs to his room and closed the door. Then he got into bed. Just as he was about to close his eyes the entity called to him. "Poor little Knives Carver went to school, and loved his teacher like a fool~" Knives covered his ears, but it still continued. "All the girls were so confused.... We all know he's got loose screws." He shook his head. "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?" He called. His mother and father had grown used to these 'tantrums' as they called them. They didn't even check anymore. "Oh, but Knives, you know what I want. I want her. And I think you can help me with that." Knives shook his head, "But... She's my friend... My only friend..." He replied to it. "Ah, but Jackknifed Carver doesn't care about that...." The entity said. Knives shook his head again, "I'm NOT like you! I'm not like JC!!!" JC only grinned down at him, "Oh, we are more alike than you think." Knives ears flattened, "I am not a pedophile!" He growled. "Oh, don't think of me as that, Knives. I'm the same age as you." JC answered. "Just let me sleep..." Knives grumbled. "Mmm... Alright, but if she grows curious.... Or you do, don't blame me if I happen to... Play." He said, going quiet. Knives rolled over in his bed, not even wanting to understand what the hell JC was talking about.

Zay got off school and went over to Knives house. He was in the back yard, stretched out on the lawn sleeping... Or so it seemed. She walked over to him. "Hi!" She said smiling. His eyes scanned over her, "Uhm... Hi." He rolled over onto his stomach and stood up. "What were you doing?" She asked. "Cloud watching... I guess." He said. She looked up at the sky, "Knives... There's an overcast..." He just shrugged at the statement. "What's wrong with you?" She asked. "Dunno..." He said. Zay flattened her ears in annoyance. He'd told her just about everything about his life... But he'd never mentioned why his family moved... And now he was acting so weird... He was zoning out on her, not paying attention. She reached for his ear to tug on it and snap him out of his daze. Just as she'd touched it he'd grabbed her wrists. "I told you not to do that!" He said. His breathing grew raspier and his eyes flickered to yellow. The red slits appeared soon after. "Mmm... I warned you Knives, this would happen." Inside his own body now being controlled for the first time in years, Knives was struck with shock. JC's eyes scanned Zay. "Mmm... Well aren't you pretty." Zay blushed, but fear soon took over as he wouldn't let her wrists go. "Knives... Let me go." The older bat just pitched his head to the side. "Oh sugarplum, I'm afraid Knives isn't here. This is Jackknifed. I've come for some fun." Zay tried to jerk away from him. "Knives, I said stop this!" Knives wish he could, but JC was in control, and until it all subsided... There was absolutely nothing he could do. JC took both of her wrists in one hand while caressing her cheek with the other. "Now, now, struggling isn't going to make this any fun at all." He said. "It's just a game. A game you'll soon find you love." Zay wasn't buying any of this. She sunk her fangs into his arm.and he released her. "Damn. That's a nasty little bite you have. But you see... I'm afraid I'm the only one who is going to be doing any biting around here. He grabbed her around the waist. "Just calm down. It will all be over soon enough. Too soon for my liking..." He ran his lips along her neck like as though being careful not to wound her. His eyes widened as he found the pulse. Zay went to scream, but he clamped a hand over her mouth. "Screaming will only get attention we don't want." He said in her ear, then went back to her neck and began to slowly penetrate her neck with his fangs. "Hmm..." He dug his fangs in further and she stiffened adrenaline and fear still running through her. Finally, when he was satisfied; he drank her blood. Zay could feel a cool liquid start to find its way into her. She didn't like it. Her eyes went hazy and she soon fell asleep.

She awoke with a headache, and realised a blanket was covering her. She glanced at the clock, it was eight-thirty. Zay saw a pair of eyes in the corner. She tilted her head, and noticed she wasn't in her own bed.... This was Knives' room. And the bat was huddled in the corner rocking back and forth, looking as though he'd not slept in days. She shifted slightly to look at him better, his eyes never left her the whole time. And the rocking never ceased. Zay went to sit up, and she felt sore. She threw the blankets off of her, then wrapped them back around herself. She didn't know where her clothes were... "Knives..?" She asked. He stopped rocking. "Where are my clothes?" He remained silent. "Knives... I'm not playing..." But he wasn't playing either. After all, he knew all about what had happened. He'd read up on such things... But he wasn't mentally stable right now. He'd never dreamed of actually doing that... But JC had control of his body at the time. Zay got up, blanket still around her, and sat next to him. He flinched back further into the corner. He wasn't wearing anything either. She swallowed. "Knives... Is... That why I wasn't supposed to mess with your ears..?" She already knew the answer, but she wanted him to talk to her, to tell her it was ok... That everything would be fine. He moved from the corner, gripping his clothes and scurried out the window like he used to at night. Zay watched him. When she looked out of the glass panes, he was gone. She bit her lip. This wasn't good. She walked over to her house, snuck inside and got dressed, and began to try and follow him. She called his name... But he was no where to be found. She soon just gave up... And when back home.

Knives was flipping out. He'd eventually gotten dressed, but he didn't remember doing it. He was angry with JC. "You.... You... attacked her." He finally managed. JC just gave a smirk, "Oh, so you did understand all that? Mmm Yes I did, and I'm pretty damn sure you enjoyed it too, at least, you weren't protesting with me." He said. Knives just shook his head, "I can't go back.... I'm going to have to run away.... I can't... I can't do this anymore... I don't want to hurt anyone..." "Eh, suit yourself." JC said, "Just remember, I'm along for the ride, Knives." He went silent. Knives looked around frantically. This was bad... He knew it was bad... His parents would be looking for him.... Zay was probably pregnant.... And he'd be charged with everything. "Mm? She shouldn't be pregnant, Knives." JC suddenly chimed in causing Knives to jump. "She's too young right now for that, Knives. I take my work, very, very seriously." Knives chose to ignore him. He traveled for a while, stopping when he reached a large castle. One of his family's old estates. The Carver scent was all over it. He opened the large doors and went inside. He muttered a soft, "Hullo?" But no one was around. It didn't look like anyone had lived here in a while. And that was enough for him. He was going to live here. This was as good as it got for him. JC couldn't harm anyone here. And he wouldn't have to face anyone ever again.

However, he was wrong on both statements.

His loneliness consumed him, he'd become more and more like JC within the next few years. When all you have to talk to is someone you hate... They tend to rub off on you. Knives was becoming more of a flirt. One nighting he stowed away in vents and came across Zay. Though neither of them remembered each other. It was odd really. He'd cupped her hand in his and kissed it dearly, asking her why she ran away from him. She only gave him a disgusted look. He hung around more, and soon met the friends Zay had. One in particular catching the eyes of both he and JC. Luck. She was a lot like Zay, didn't care for him at first... But she soon warmed up to him. Letting him have his way. To Knives, Luck was like that one diamond amongst a lot of silver. JC thought so too, and so with his clever thinking had gotten Knives completely hooked on her. Though most of it was Knives own feelings. The one thing he hadn't planned on was Steve. He and Luck had some kind of special something. And he couldn't handle that. He figured at first to practically let Luck touch his ears, just so he could get what he wanted. However, remembering Zay, he didn't do that. Instead, he decided to just let the cards in his hand fall where they needed. He became obsessed with Luck, dedicating a whole closet to her, and apparently he learned she was just as obsessed with him as he was her. But Zay was out at the wrong time once, and Knives took her, charming her with the venom he'd come so used to using and then doing the same thing JC had done all those years ago. This produced his first son, Jayke.

Knives isn't exactly crazy, we aren't entirely sure what he is.... Insane? No... He's just trapped between reality and the fantasy world JC created for him. Who knows what might have happened had JC never been sealed inside him. He might have been a good little boy like all the rest of his classmates, but who are we kidding. That wouldn't make a very interesting story, now would it?

In the months that followed after this, Knives did go back to school and he graduated every time. He's also had 4 more sons. One with Luck and three others with his, now husband, Erik. Strange turn of events for the once starving romantic, isn't it? Erik was something different to Knives, but it was that difference that he liked. He wasn't exactly kind to him at first, but that could've been due to the effects of JC still being within him. As time passed though, both he and Erik grew more and more fond of each other, and Knives eventually decided that he would get them rings, as an alternative to imprinting with him. This way they could still communicated by thought. And after some time he also decided he couldn't wait for Erik to turn of proper age, and proposed to him anyways. They got married on April 3rd, 2010 in Belgium and since then Knives life has done a complete turn around. He's gotten back into his hobbies of cooking/baking and playing the pipe organ. Even though JC is no longer sealed within him now, and they are separated.. he still can feel the lingering effects of his brother, and it's almost like there's an emptiness to him, but in the long run he's in a much better state of mind now that he doesn't have to worry about his ears and the evil that once was linked to them.
