My favourite gift is very dear and near to my heart. It gives me a strong sense of joy and belonging as I look at it utop my shelf, its hollow sockets staring back at me. It was a gift of great thought, one that began my life's work.
I grew up with the knowledge that children should be seen and not heard. I did my best to make daddy proud and stick to those rules, slowly coming to the liking of quiet time alone with my needle and thread over rough housing. And honestly, who would wish to play in the dirt? My clothes would become torn and dirty, neither things I desired, even as a child. As I grew older, the world became bigger, and I had to speak out, or I would be left behind. I stood in daddy's shadow, giggling at jokes, smiling at boys who wished to kiss my hand, looking down on those who looked up to my title.
But those glances, and whispers, and secrets were not enough to keep me entertained. I would sew, learn to bake, dabble in tea arts, but at night I would become bored. It was nights where that boredom became a stinging itch that I would put on the shortest skirt I owned, in my defense still hit my knees, and I would sweet talk my butler, and I would leave. Leave for the city minutes but worlds away from our estate. I would meet new people, smell and touch new things, use my voice as loudly as I could.
That was where I met them, a quiet man and a colourful child. They would sing and drink tea and dress as the adults of my world would, but they would cuss, they would kiss, they would show me knives and skulls and magic I had never known before. And I fell in love. Love that would take me every evening, evenings I could not leave, to my small stash of treasures I had brought back over the months. A book of gears and new life, a stuffed animal of pins and human hair, a sweet enchanted rose that no matter its lack of water had not died but felt as soft as it did the day it was given to me.
I had fallen in love with a dark world that lived and always existed within me. A quiet whisper that would give life to the dead, and hope to those who had given up. Less secrets, more forgiveness. Less lies, more honesty. I wanted to give that love into new life, life that had not been given a chance to live its own. I wanted to share this love more than anything. So here were are. As those hollow sockets stare back at me, my needle is in hand. Skin made from thin leather and tuff, some bits mismatched, but all brought together with the love I was given by the city and a quiet man and a colourful child.
