Anjo has always lived a dark life. He went blind when he was very young, which cost him much of his childhood. Many of his friends wouldn't play with him anymore because they said his eyes were too scary. Because of this, Anjo wears his ritual mask at all times, even when he's not performing. He just can't get passed that feeling of knowing that everyone is staring at his eyes.
His usual duties included healing the sick and helping people with any other unfortunate problems they might have. He is considered to be the median between his world, and the spirit world. As a shaman, Anjo cannot refuse the requests of others even if he wanted to. If he did refuse, his powers would weaken, and his purpose would diminish. Anjo lives up in the mountains away from his little village. He only comes down for the shamanic rituals in which he plays his beautiful hide drums, and the villagers dance the night away.
However, today, something unusual happened. A young neela managed to hike all the way up to Anjo's den. When he arrived, Anjo was playing his flute. He seemed almost as if he wasn't there, perhaps off in the spirit world. The young neela waddled over to Anjo, who snapped out of his dreamy state. Anjo put his flute away and sat back down, waiting for his visitor to speak. However, the visitor never spoke. He sat, staring in Anjo's direction for quite some time before he began crying.
Anjo had not expected his visitor to be such a young age. He was actually kind of surprised that he had managed to climb all the way up his mountain, and maybe a little annoyed that his parents allowed him to do so. Anjo sighed and brought some tea over to him to make him stop crying. The little neela sipped on his tea, and began to tell Anjo why he was there. The neela had lost his vision, and everything was black for him. When Anjo asked how he climbed up the mountain if he was truly blind, the neela responded with a shrug. He simply knew where to go. It was as if he sensed Anjo's powers, and followed them all the way up the mountain. He asked Anjo to heal his eyes, and restore the vision to them. Anjo's heart dropped as he heard the young neela's request.
He sat the little neela down in front of a curtain, and went behind it to his drums. He went back off into that dreamy state as if he was off in the spirit world again. The little neela was crying again. However, this didn't seem to affect Anjo. Perhaps he was already too far gone. Anjo kept playing his drum ever so softly, like a heartbeat. Thump thump, thump thump. The little neela eventually stopped crying, and fell asleep.
Later that night, the little neela awoke from his slumber and opened his eyes. He could see. He looked around and noticed he was back at his home, and he raced outside to see if Anjo was still around. He looked up at Anjo's mountain and saw the smoke from his fire. The little neela smiled to himself, and shouted his thanks at the top of his lungs. Anjo walked over to the edge of the mountain facing the young neela, and bowed his head. If only he would have been so fortunate in his young years. Everything would have been different.
