This forest was once peaceful and filled with life. That was before men came. They came with axes and fire. So much turned to ash, it suffocated what trees were left. The animals fled. I should have been here to stop it.

Now it was just a barren wasteland. No green remains, only gray. Even the sky looks dead and dismal. I kneel down beside the remnants of a tree stump. Once, there was a burrow there. All gone.

Deeper in the forest nothing seems to be any different. Then I see the sprouts. Tiny green shoots in orderly lines. One day they will be trees. But what is this red string doing here? I look over the grid the string makes and scream with rage. These trees have been marked as future lumber. I rip them out of the ground and toss them to the side. These trees are going to grow and thrive. Any who touch them will have to answer to me.

Weeks pass. I spend my time tending to the sprouts. Each new growth makes me giddy with delight. They are doing so week I decide to make a short journey in search of new seeds.

For days I travel through green lands dotted with wild flowers. I fill my small bag with their fallen seeds. These I will sprinkle throughout the empty forest. In time, color will override the gray.

When I return, I see there is already color. The red strings have returned. Once again I tear them from the ground. These trees-to-be have only me as there protector. No animal will venture here until they are grown. In the meantime, I will scatter the seeds and help them grow.

The flowers grow much quicker than the trees. They bring trouble I had not foreseen. Humans who live nearby are coming to pick them. I can hear them coming closer. They are only children; they mean no harm so I will go easy on them.

The first reaches for a flower and I flick my hand forward. She shrieks when she feels the sharp sting of magic on her finger, assuming it was just a thorn. I do this each time a child reaches for a flower. They give up and choose to play elsewhere. All, except one.

The last a little girl, stands alone looking around. “Hello?” she calls. The dead tree I hide behind offers little concealment, so I remain quiet. “The flowers are very pretty. I especially like the pink ones. I’m going to come back to see them again tomorrow. Goodbye.” She turns and hurries after the other children.

The next day, she is here again. She comes every day for a full week, chattering to the air and the flowers. Some days she brings a watering can and sprinkles the earth around the flowers. She is careful never to pick them thought.

One day, she doesn’t visit. I wait all day but she doesn’t show up. I put her out of my mind and go back to tending the new growth. The trees are growing quickly, thanks to patience and magic.

The wind shifts, bringing the terrible smell of smoke with it. I find its source; the little village is under attack. Bandits run through the streets, weapons drawn. There is a shriek I have heard once before and I look to see the girl being chased. She is running straight for the forest. She stumbles, falling to the ground. Blood runs from a gash on her arm.

The bandit closes in on her, a dreadful smirk on his face. As he nears, I become a fearsome black wolf. My teeth snap and he looks at me. A shudder visibly runs down his body.

I feel tiny fingers digging into my fur. The bandit moves to grab her and I bite down hard on his extended hand. Bones crunch, blood flows and he screams’ shake it until he falls to his knees. The hand is ruined and he knows this. I take a step forward and he runs screaming back to the village.

“Please help us.” The girl pleads with me, tears streaming down her dirty face. I decide a village of good people would be better than a village of bandits and race for the village. Flesh tears beneath my teeth and claws. Blood gushes over my fur. It is so easy to scare them off. In the end, the villagers stare at me frightfully. I am the enemy now.

Again, the girl’s tiny fingers grasp my fur. “You can’t hurt her, she helped us.”

“Fastread, get awafrom that thing.” He mother commands.

“No, she helped us and now we have to help her.” Fastrad argues. “We have to leave the forest alone.”

“That will destroy our business.” A man shouts. The way he holds his axe so well proclaims him to be a lumberjack. I growl, placing the majority of the blame on him. His knees wobble but he quickly gets them under control.

“You have to find another job then, because she will take revenge on any who touch her trees in the same way she attacked the bandits.” Fastrad says. I growl to emphasize it, even though it is not entirely true.

The villagers talk amongst themselves wand Fastrad walks me back to the forest. “Thank you.” She says. I wait for her to leave before changing back from my wolf form.

A month passes by before Fastrad returns. By then the trees are almost fully grown and the ground is covered in grass and flowers. I hide when I see her coming.

“Hello again, I’ve come to see the flowers.” Fastrad calls. “The villagers say they will not touch a single tree unless you say they may. I am smiling when I step out from behind the trees.

“Thank you Fastrad.” I say. She smiled broadly. I reach into a small pouch at my side and hand her a tiny seed. “This is for you.”

“What is it?” she asks.

“It’s just a seed, but it will grow into a big tree.” I say. “It might even have pink flowers.” Fastrad holds the seed carefully in her hands and runs from the forest.

“I’m going to plant it right now.” She calls over her shoulder.

A few days later I see where she has planted it at the very edge of the forest. She has surrounded it with stones, making a tiny wall around the dirt mound. It makes me smile. I touch the soil and feel the seed begin to grow instantly. In no time at all, Fastrad’s tree will be as tall as those tiny grove I have been tending.
