Are you woken up by a mysterious rustling sound in the middle of the night? Do you find crumbs all over the kitchen work surfaces in the morning, despite having wiped them down the after dinner? Are you disappointed to find that your biscuits have gone stale due to the packet being left open?

If you’ve answered yes to the above then the chances are that your house has been visited by Denise, a tiny hamster with a truly ginormous sweet tooth! Now, most hamsters are known for their greedy natures and their hoarding tendencies, but Denise is a bit more selective in the food she seeks. If it’s savoury, green and leafy then she’ll give it a wide berth but if it’s sweet, sugary and highly processed then she won’t be able to resist. Cakes are a strong favourite, in particular Madeira cakes and Victoria sponges - yum yum!

At night when the humans in the house go to sleep, Denise breaks out of her cage, hops into her ball and rolls out of the cat flap! She’s a cunning little hamster and she has a list of the households which stock her favourite treats so that she may plan her raids accordingly. For example, the Barkers two doors down always have a good supply of chocolate in their cupboards and old Mrs Coutts is great for freshly baked goods as she’s forever baking for her grandkids.

Those big cheek pouches of hers sure do come in handy for storing what she can’t eat at the scene of the crime! Once her belly is full and her cheeks are stuffed, she rolls off back home and tucks herself back into her cage before the sun rises. Denise makes these trips every two to three nights, although Halloween and Christmas are extra busy times for her as it’s much too difficult to resist the sweet allure of festive candy!

Her owner, a little girl named Susie, is completely unaware of Denise’s sugar addiction. In fact, she takes great care to provide her with a healthy, balanced diet of premium hamster food and fresh fruit and vegetables. Sadly, this food all goes to waste as it either gets thrown out when her cage is cleaned or pushed through the bars and onto the floor.

So the next time you find mysterious crumbs in your kitchen, have a closer look and see if you can spot the nibbles around the edges of your cakes or tiny paw prints across your jelly. Denise’s appetite knows no limits and she’s certainly not fussy about who she steals from, as long as it's sugary!
