Yoshka grew up in Shadovsk, a quaint little village in the
south of Ukraine and freely roamed wherever she pleased.
She was an orphan and to her recollection, had never
known either of her parents. Her memories of childhood
were rather bare and not normally pleasant, due to growing
up in orphanages her entire life and she rarely liked to
look back on them...

One morning, after a rather difficult spat with her matron,
Yoshka bound off once again by herself to take a trip to
the Black Sea. She loved being by the water and took as
many trips as she could to be near it. As she grew closer
the mists drawing off the water hit her in the face and
she laughed. Oh how good the sea could make her feel
when she needed it! She pounced waves rolling in and
splashed around at the jellyfish dancing in the water.
But wait, what was that? A little further down the beach she
eyed something bobbing in the sea's water; Yoshka rushed
down to the spot and quickly plucked the particle out with
her mouth and dropped it in the sand.

Yoshka batted her eyes in amazement, for laying in the
sand in front of her was what looked like an ancient old
matryoshka doll! Yosha had secretly always wished for
a doll such as this, but had never had one to call her
own. And in this moment, remembering back to her earlier
childhood, she vaguely recalled her matron hiding money
in the second tiniest matryoshka doll. Working her mouth
and front hoof together she gently opened the largest
doll and out popped a slightly smaller doll, so she went on
opening the dolls layer by layer. When she got to the
second-smallest doll, the final one was missing, just as
she had hoped! There was also something else in its
place: a small parchment of paper. As Yoshka unrolled the
paper, she noticed a strange humming sound around her
that was growing stronger by the second. But in the mix
of her excitement and curiosity, she shrugged it off and
proceeded to read the words written on the old parchment.
"Oh little hearts, how you flutter and fly, I summon this
magic of the mystic divine, Answers I seek, do my will as
I speak, I welcome your presence, come to me, essence!"

In that immediate second, light - overwhelmingly bright
light - was blinding her; white was all she saw. As she
closed her eyes to shut the light out, she could smell
damp earth and could hear chattering of birds; her
senses told her she was no longer near the water.
And as opened her eyes and looked around she realized
she was deep in a forest. What a beautiful place this was,
almost serene, birds lingered, wild flowers blooming.
But as she looked up, she was slightly taken aback, for
on the tree is front of her was a photograph of herself
and as she stared at it, many more faded into place all
around her. Yoshka didn't know what to do, she had never
had her photograph taken or knew anyone that had.
She only knew what they were because her matron had
owned so many of them, which she called 'memories' and
would often show her from time to time.

As Yoshka scrunched her body down to the ground of the
earth in fear, she heard a male voice speak.

"Hello Yoshka, we have been waiting for you, your arrival
has been longly anticipated. I am Montage."

The voice did not fill her with more fear as she thought
it would, but more-so eased it, suprisingly. As Yoshka,
stood she looked around to find the body the voice
belonged to and no more had spotted it when it began to
approach her.

"I am sorry if the photographs and my arrival startled
you, I mean you no harm. As I said, my name is Montage.
I am the Spirit of Memories and this is the Forest of
Bayad."

And with those words, he was gone.

"But wait! Wait! Why am I here? Where did you go? Come
back, come back!" Yoshka screamed into the forest.

Yoshka sullenly looked over to the trees and all around
her. So many photographs, so many that were never taken.
How could this be? She didn't understand what was going
on at all. The closer she moved to photographs the more
vivid the photographs became. And as she looked up to the
one closet, it seemed to morph into a photograph of the
creature Montage and then he spoke.

"Answers you seek, aha. We all seek answers, but you
are special Yoshka, and so have been brought to the core
of the Forest of Bayad. These photographs you see
are your memories, all of the good and the bad laid out
in front of you. What you choose to hold on to, that is,
is what is important. Do you like looking at these
photographs Yoshka? Do you relive all of these memories
inside your mind when you look at them, wishing you
could be there in the right then and now?

"No! I do not like looking at these photograph's Montage
and I certainly do not wish to relive the memories of
them! I wish you would take them away!" yelled yoshka.

And with a wave of Montage's paw, the photographs
faded away.

Light spilled beneath the trees, radiating the splendor
of the forest, and as Yoshka looked up, Montage
shimmered into solid formation in front of her.

"Listen dear Yoshka and I will tell of what I know,"
and with that Yoshka sat, rested beneath the canopy
of trees.

"You are far wiser than anticipated Yoshka, one does
well not to dwell on things of the past, lest they lose
themselves. Some minds hold onto the past, and forget
about the present and future. The past will always be
apart of us, none of us can change that. The future is
always in front of us, beckoning for us to leap. We must
build for new tomorrows today, all the while remembering
what the past has taught us."

"I was once young too, of flesh and bones and blood.
I made many mistakes, some far worse than you can ever
imagine, but those are tales for another time my friend.
I was given a second chance here in the Forest of Bayad.
Bayad saw into my soul, deep inside my mind, far deeper
than any spirit could. What she saw there surprised me,
but not she, who knew I had great purpose. A far greater
one than I could have imagined."

"I was to be the Spirit of Memories, to bring lost broken
souls to this place. We hoped that by placing trinkets
they longed for in the presence of these broken that they
would feel the pull of the objects and open them, reading
the words on the tattered parchement, and bringing them
here, to show them their lives and present choice to them
a chance to once and for all let go of the past. Some wept
and turned away, ashamed of their photograph memories,
or just simply did not like reliving the burdens of the
past, like you Yoshka. Some took the second chance given
to them, to let the past be part of them, but to build
towards the future and those souls are then sent back to
their worlds with new light and life in them. These changes
are celebrated, for some it is so hard for. For some look
upon their photographic pasts and got so lost inside
their memories, they were lost to their own selves.
When this happens there is so very little we can do for
those who grasp so firmly on the past, for letting it go
for them is like ripping their ever beating heart in two.
We have no choice but to send them back to their worlds
as they came, for you must want change first for yourself,
or my words and help has no meaning."

"But what do you want with me? Am I to be offered a choice
as well? I don't quite understand, as I do not live in the
past, nor dwell on it often." spoke Yoshka.

Montage chuckled "No my dear lamb, the choices I have to
offer you are far greater than that. The Forest and it's
own would like you to call upon it as your home, to work
here and help lost ones find their way again. It's the
greatest work I've ever known, and not many are ever
offered this great task. I know this is probably
overwhelming, to be whisked out of your world and into
another, for no greater purpose than this. It can
sometimes be difficult, but knowing you have helped
in ways no other can is that of the greatest rewards.
I can only give you this night to think it over in
your thoughts, for I shall be back with the rising of
the sun. I hope you will join us Yoshka, the Forest
is very safe, you will find a brook not far from here
and many fragrant fruit trees on the way. I shall see
you in dawn, farewell my friend."

And with a crooked smile of departure, Montage faded
away.

Yoshka was in a bit of shock, for no one in her life
had ever really wanted her, nor had she ever had
some place to call a real home. However, this could
be a rewarding task to make her own or it could be
difficult and she was sure Montage would argee that
it was a risk. But what had she in her life now?
Nothing really. And as these thoughts snuck up her
the thirst that she hadn't noticed before reared
it's ugly head and Yoshka sauntered off to locate
this brook to appease it.

There was a hint of a trail laid out and Yoshka
did her best to follow it. The Forest was lush
and full of different fruit trees, pear, orange,
and her favorite; apple. The branches were heavy
from the weight of the fruit so it was easy for
her to pluck one from the low branch with her
mouth. Even the fruit tasted of another world!
Delicious and crispy, her stomach was content
to say the least. And as a cool breeze blew and
rippled her fur, her ears twitched, and with
the movement of her ears she could hear the light
splash of water; the brook must be near.

Within minutes she was at the side of the little
stream, slowly dipping her mouth to drink to
quench her thirst, cool and fresh, with a hint
of moss. Yoshka yawned a fell back under the
shade of a nearby Willow tree, the sounds of the
water lulling her to sleep.
