There was something really wrong with this place. From the minute she walked into the asylum, she felt it. A strange itch, like spiderwebs coated her skin. She was fairly certain there had always been something wrong here, but she couldn't prove it. The records were lost, destroyed, or maybe never existed at all. Nobody in Central's Archives Division could find any records of crimes reported here, but the archives were a mess. The city was awash in crime, nobody had the time to organize things from a hundred years ago. She'd never been called here before, but she wasn't the only cop in this area. Something bad was happening here though. The doors were unlocked when she came in, and she couldn't find a nurse or doctor anywhere - actually, she hadn't seen anyone at all yet, and that was even more disturbing. Whatever was happening, it was her job to find out. If only she could make that itch go away...There, out of the corner of her eye, a shadow, darting across the end of the hallway. Or was it? She wasn't so sure anymore. Her eyes and ears seemed to be playing tricks on her, she was beginning to doubt herself in this place. That was the third shadow she'd seen, but every time she turned for a closer look, whatever had been there was gone, or never was. Twice now she'd heard what she thought was laughter too, but when she pinpointed the location, there was nobody, not even a sign that anyone had been there at all. She was starting to think someone had set her up, the 911 call was strange enough, then finding this place empty...it must be someone's idea of a joke. She cleared the main floor, and the floor above it. The only place left to clear was the basement. There was nothing and no one here, but she still couldn't shake the itch. In fact, the closer she came to the basement access stairwell, the more her skin crawled and burned, like a thousand tiny insects were biting her."This is stupid BB. Stop being paranoid and get your ass down those stairs," she scolded herself, "the sooner you clear it, the sooner you can get back to Central and real cop work." She thought saying it all aloud would help ease the tension, but hearing her voice echo, lonely, down the hall just made her more uncomfortable. She could feel her steps slowing, the dread in the pit of her belly worming it's way up to her throat. She didn't want to go into that basement, but she couldn't say why not. She visibly shook herself, and put her hand on the doorknob to the stairwell. She'd been a cop for ten years, damn it, she could do this. It took more will then she thought it should, but finally, she turned the knob and pushed the door open. Then she stood at the top of the stairs, staring into the yawning blackness, fighting to hold back the scream that was trying to claw it's way out of her throat.
