The Harsh Desert With A Hidden Oasis

Even though Edessa is only colonized by mortals at it's coasts, only those born with magic can survive the brutal desert with out dying. Many believe the Elves are of myth and legend. But they are real. They survive by their magic in an elf-made oasis in the center of the continent. No man has ever seen this place and no man ever will unless with the aid of an elf and according to their law that is prohibited.
Elves can live for as long as they want. They chose their death. The longer you live the more horrors you see befall on the world around you. But, also the longer you live the more knowledge you gain. And to the elves knowledge is currency.
The Elders, a group of 20 elves over thousands of years old, are the leaders. They created the oasis using their magic. Before then, humans and elves lived together, but cultures collided. Humans did not believe knowledge was of any value and required gold and silver. Elves did not believe in taking rock from the earth and using it as a means of payment. Humans often tricked the elves by giving them made up or useless information in exchange for their magic abilities. Many elves were ashamed over their actions with the humans and thus wishing to die, so they did. They chose to die. The Elders decided to take root in a place no man, woman or child could cross. A place so harsh that only magic provided by the elves could make it livable. So they chose the center of Edessa, where the sun is so hot that it beats the pigment out of the hair and eyes of the elves. Every elf has light gray, almost white hair and pale yellow eyes. It was hard to determine which elf had what power. So The Elders agreed on giving marks. Making it easy to obtain one's place in elf society.
Another problem was that their knowledge of the world grew scarce. These beings strive on knowledge. So The Elders decided that when an elf-ling reaches sixteen years they must travel around the world to gain knowledge and only then can they return and become an adult elf.
