"Me and the Lord, we got an understanding."
"Joliet" Jake Blues got his name from two things: being in Joliet prison, and growing up loving the blues from the janitor at the orphanage. He was born Jake Papageorge, the son of a woman who went to jail for killing her husband -- his father. It was in that orphanage he met Elwood Delaney; or rather, outside that orphanage. He was near Sister Mary Stigmata when she took the baby in one cold night in January. Elwood, as he grew, immediately became attached to Jake and the two became inseperable.
In their early teenage years, the two became "blood" brothers; slicing their wrists open and letting each other's blood mingle until they felt they were one. They were Jake and Elwood Blues, and their father was named Curtis. This is how they saw it.
They were troublemakers; Jake more than Elwood, running away from their "home" at seventeen to perform the blues they loved so much. They got together with other guys, making music and stealing food and anything else they needed to. But after a while, Jake's love of money and other things got the best of him and he was sent to prison. But regardless of this, and even though his other friends left him, his darling little brother Elwood stayed by his side.
He got out in 1980, seeing Elwood's smiling face in a car he hated at first but later on came to love. Even after Jake had been proven guilty, sentenced to time in prison, Elwood loved him. Even though they weren't related.
Even though they ran away, Jake and Elwood always kept in touch with the staff of the orphanage to know what was going on. Sister Mary, the "Penguin," completely hated the people they became, but somehow found a way to still love them. And even though she was strict and seemed to hate them; they loved her too. Why else would they have worked so hard to raise the money? Sure, they might've gotten in a few car wrecks and a heap of trouble, but they got the money to the tax appraiser.
Elwood got more time than Jake for all the wreckless driving charges. Jake, as an "assistant," only got two years; while brother Elwood got almost ten. When Jake got out, he had nothing but loneliness, and that's when he turned to drugs.

It started with pot, simple stuff. Later on, the crowd he hung with at the clubs convinced him to try rougher things. He loved the feel of being high, that feeling of being invincible. Before long he made it a point to be in a constant drugged state; starting the high all over again when he felt it would wear off. Still he wondered how Elwood was doing. He was too afraid to visit him, for fear he would break down crying at the fact that his idea made Elwood live in hell. All he did was drink liquor (whisky and vodka) and get high. That was Jake's life for years.
One day as a New Year's Resolution, he decided he would get clean. Moderate amounts of alcohol, no drugs at all. He relasped after two months, when it sunk in Elwood wouldn't be out of prison for seven more years. He guzzled a pint of vodka within hours, and shot up a massive concoction of the two harshest drugs he had in his posession. Within minutes, he began to choke. It was amazingly difficult to breathe and his heart was trying to work it's way out of his chest. He passed out on the floor, coughing and inhaling deeply, but in a few short moments it was too late.
"Fuck," was Jake's last word. After that, he couldn't speak anymore. He closed his eyes, weeping softly. Elwood would never forgive him for this, abandoning him all for the selfish reason of being lonely. As his heartrate kicked up, he prayed the Lord's Prayer in his mind, hoping God would forgive him for all he did.

It almost felt out of body; he saw whitish smoke in his mind. A deep, booming voice proudly asked, "Jake Papageorge, do you realise what has happened?"
"Yes, sir," he said. "I killed myself it seems. Killed myself for stupid reasons."
"I understand."
Jake's eyes lit up behind his sunglasses. Him and the Lord did have an understanding. "God, sir?" he then questioned softly, walking towards the light. "Please take care of my little brother, his name is Elwood..."
