For centuries, the kingdom had maintained a strictly male hierarchy. The most qualified male of the ruling family would ascend to the throne by immediate right; if no suitable candidate was available, the position was presented for competition among the leading men of the noble families. In this way, those who previously had little to no claim to power could work their way in, if fortune favored them.
The current lord king Aldrich Wynshire was growing worried. His wife, the queen Tyna, had thus far failed to provide any next of kin at all. When she was at last confirmed pregnant, the king rejoiced. Without a suitable successor his bloodline, which had presided over the kingdom for a record length of time, would finally lose their vice-grip on power. The single worst fate Aldrich could imagine was the birth of a daughter... Pryn's birth heralded death to the reign of Wynshire. Worse yet, Tyna's body could not endure the single birth she had been permitted. For 26 hours after the birth she struggled, and then was snuffed out alongside Aldrich's remaining hopes.
