Don't Try to Understand...
My home... Deep in the desert stands a treacherous crag. I came to this place with a team of geologists who aimed to excavate and study the rare minerals that were found here. I was a mindless droid at the time, without soul or conscious thought; I was programmed to defend the camp from the terrible creatures that inhabit that region. The geologists discovered a vast cavern and moved the camp inside to better protect it from heat and beast. It was within that cavern that I was exposed to the strange crystals that sparked my soul into being.
At first I was unaware of the change taking place within me. There was nothing to lead me to conclude that I was no longer a mindless droid. I started to store memories, however, and that left me confused. I was a security drone, my camera only recorded video when a threat was sensed. It was not logical for me to remember events after they had taken place.
Then, for the first time, I slept and had a dream.
Visions of enemies attacking in the night assaulted me, and without knowing it was only a vision I leapt up and began firing rockets into the darkness around me. The blast knocked out a key supporting wall and the cavern began to cave in. I then had my first taste of fear.
I was saved, then, by a new compulsion I later learned was something called "self-preservation." The new urge over-rode my protective programming and drove me to dive into the underground lake to escape the crashing stones. My lit eyes saw a submerged tunnel and I entered to avoid the rocks raining into the water around me. I walked along the bottom as the tunnel wound on and on until the pitch blackness around me started to turn gray and the tunnel opened out into a second subterranean body of water.
I made my way across the bottom of the new lake until I located a spot where it angled up. I followed the incline until I surfaced from the icy water and found myself in a new cavern far larger than the one I had come from and lit by pale crystals in the walls and ceiling.
