Azriel is an 'angel', but he is an artificial being created by God to replace the Heavenly beings that have free will. After the actions of Lucifer and the fallen angels, He no longer trusted the capability of having free will, so He created artificial angels that would carry out His deeds and only knew to obey the Archangels and Himself.

Azriel's task was to ferry souls of the dead to be judged. He patrols a northern region that's crowded by villages and indigenous tribes (due to the cold climate).

Like every angel, Azriel has the capability to fly and heal the sick and wounded when he is told to. He can also teleport quickly from location to location and has minimal control over ice.
