He came to the pond nearly every day. Rain, shine, snow- she was always sure to find him there, sitting or kneeling, reciting and writing his haikus. She only saw him up close through the water, his image rippled and distorted, but she could see past that: she could see how creative he was, how attentive his senses were, how beautiful his poetry was. The sun would rise, and she would waste her time waiting for him. He would go through his daily motions, and she would watch, content, below the water's surface. Every time he turned to leave she leaned up on the rocks to watch him go, winding his way back through the gardens, regretting that she hadn't shown herself that day.

Well, she decided, that was going to change. Eventually. She knew so much about him just by listening, by waiting. She knew his favorite color and his best and worst poetry. She could tell apart his happy laughter and his 'well that was the wrong word' laughter. It was like they were already friends, for Christ's sake! You know, apart from the fact that he had no idea that she existed. That was a bit of a set back, in all honesty.

She spent days debating how to reveal herself. She could always just tug him into the water, but she wouldn't want to get him upset before introducing herself, and that really didn't constitute a proper introduction, after all. Oh! She could always write her own haiku about him, and leave it on a slip of paper outside of the pond. The idea seemed flawless- until she completely soaked the piece of paper and messed up the poem. That was embarrassing. He hadn't even noticed the soggy ink-smeared paper anyways.

It was time for plan B. She was going to wait for the perfect opportunity, the perfect poem recital, the perfect anything. Then, while he was distracted with that, she would surface, revealing herself dramatically and- no. That was silly, she didn't want to scare the guy, really. Plus, she wasn't one for dramatic entrances in the end. She found herself laying, thinking, at the bottom of the pond.

The sun was beating down on the water's surface all morning, and if she wasn't positive that he was coming anyways, she would have bet on today being a good day. The water around her just gave off that vibe, and she could swear that today was going to be different. What exactly that meant, however, she was sure. She could hear him approaching the pond, sitting on the smooth stones that circled it. She flipped over onto her stomach, blowing a stream of bubbles. She really did want to make herself known, but she was having such a hard time thinking of just how to do that, that she wasn't entirely sure she could.

That is, until she heard him begin to speak. No less than a line into his haiku and she was sure that if there was ever a chance to show herself, it was now. She closed her eyes, smiled, and surfaced.
