Riftborn
From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free.
-Jacques Yves Cousteau-
Before the opening of the rift, Zee was perfectly content to float in the primordial bowl of soup that was his little corner of space. His only real companion was Chomper, another shifty blob of cosmic matter that delighted in chasing him around and around the secluded bubble, nipping at his tentacles and generally being a nuisance. It's not that these two couldn't get along. It's just hard not to be crabby when your living space is just a hair bigger than the average postage stamp.
That all changed the day their whole world turned upside down and they entered the atmosphere of Subeta.
Zee was falling, falling, falling...splat! His gelatinous body thumped up against something hard and nearly as slimy as his own skin. The boulder was smack dab in the middle of the sea, a good chunk of nautical miles from the shores of Omen Islands. Zee reached out a nervous tentacle, wondering if the noisy wet blue stuff would repel him as the space bubble had done.
Water was cold...but it didn't hurt to touch. He launched himself into the air, feeling the rush of hurricane winds and for a few brief seconds, enjoying the feeling of true, unlimited freedom.
Until he hit the water and sank like a stone.
He didn't panic. He was a creature of space and time. The timeless do not fear death because time itself cannot die.
It was rather fun, swishing his tentacles around in all that blueness, striking out in one direction and then another. He got a look at a pod of wild tutani that wanted nothing to do with him. Fascinated by these strange creatures, he followed the group until...
Bang!
He rubbed the lump above his massive eye. He'd never known pain before but ramming his head against the bottom of a pirate ship was a rather valuable lesson in the reality of solid objects.
He climbed up over the side of the ship, Chomper clinging to his back. The pirates had been having a merry time, drinking their way through a casket of ale they'd liberated from Babette. They all stared slack-jawed at the massive pink and purple monstrosity that barreled down the planks with a thousand tentacles waving and a gleam in his eye.
Zee came to a dead stop when all his new friends started throwing themselves off the ship with screams of terror. Sure, Chomper had tried to take off a few legs, but he was only being playful.
The wonders of a working ship soon distracted him from his sadness. He had great fun swallowing cannonballs and seeing how far out he could launch them. Chomper delighted in eating his way through two tons of salt pork. They both ignored the pile of sparkly stuff they found in a wooden chest. Not only did it not taste good but it reminded them ever so slightly of their former prison. Gold was a metal, after all.
When the ship ceased to interest the pair, they returned to the water, striking out west until they came to a new land that smelled of cherry blossoms and tea.
The citizens of Shengui Guo had never seen such a strange creature as the eye that bobbed on the surface of the sea. They took to leaving him offerings of tea cakes and little cups of sake. He gradually realized that letting Chomper take a snap at anything moving would not win him friends. He began to observe how other Subetans interacted with their minions and took it upon himself to train Chomper.
He nearly got a tentacle bit off for his efforts but in time the two came to a wary truce. Chomper would not bite anyone unless instructed to do so and Zee would give the little brute at least half of all the food he managed to gather.
In time, they would go on to explore all the lands of Subeta. They even made a few true friends along the way. Zee thought he could happily spend the rest of his life among all those land dwellers, moving from one place to the next, a drifter who was at home wherever the wind and tides took him.
Until he discovered Atebus.
He was hesitant to return to space at first but some part of him had been longing for the skies ever since he lost that weightless feeling of being far beyond the reach of any planetary pull.
City was lovely but still had that gravity pull that land lovers needed. Zee was about to give up and buy a ticket for the next shuttle back to Subeta when he stumbled upon a little-known thrill shop called Zero Gravity.
Feel the wonders of true weightlessness! Fool your friends with your ability to walk on the ceiling!
As soon as the bored feli behind the counter flipped the switch, he was airborne, he was weightless.
He was free!
He.
Was.
