Dahlia is a Fable — a manufactured species also known as "sewing spiders" and occasionally referred to as Seamstresses or Widowers. She sews her web into the gaps between the threads of creation, corrupting the space and creating rifts in reality. Functioning as a sort of "black market" in the land of the dead, she harvests heartstrings, vocal chords, blood vessels and such from wandering lost souls (any piece of a body that can be related to sewing thread). Technically, Fables are unable to generate their own silk, so they steal... substitute materials.
