Eric Slingby is a shinigami whom is trying to help a close friend and fellow shinigami named Alan Humphries who has fallen ill with a deadly illness. With that, Eric believed in an old shinigami legend saying that if one collects one thousand souls, it would cure the illness his friend has, meaning that Eric has been secretly murdering innocent people to gain those souls.

Meanwhile, the Queen of England has caught whiff of Eric's doings and sends out her watchdog, Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his demonic butler Sebastian Michaelis, to put a stop to these murders. Much later, Ciel finds out that Eric was behind the killings when Sebastian confronted him about being the criminal and provides a list of suspects before explaining how he narrowed it down due to the scent and then attacks Eric with Alan's death scythe and revels his cinematic record (a persons memories) which showed the truth. And with Alan present and witnessing his cinematic record, Eric fled the scene with Alan chasing after him.

Later, Eric shows up with the Viscount of Druitt, Lord Aleister Chamber, who has two girls tied up for his own amusement. The girls beg for Eric to save them, which he does but soon kills them for their souls. The Viscount had witnessed his doings and simply claims that he thought that the way Eric had murdered the girls was beautiful. Eric then reasons with the Viscount whom will supply him with the souls he needs because of the Viscount's ability to gather a large amount of women easily (is somewhat of a ladies man), which makes all of Eric's victims female.

Then later, Ciel had gotten another letter from the Queen with an invitation an opera that the Viscount is hosting with the rules listed that only women and children are invited with the exception of men if they are accompanied by a woman. With that, Ciel, joined with the shinigami Grell Sutcliff and Alan, all dress in disguise as women with Sebastian as their male escort.

During the opera, Alan looks for his friend while the opera singer sings but soon stops which leaves all the guests in confusion as a strange man comes and winds her back up like a doll and continues to sing. Alan soon spots Eric and beings his approach but stops as the doll stops singing once more and the guests start to panic to escape as loud noises are being heard as a gas starts leaking to put down the guests. During the confusion, Eric went and captured Ciel with his scythe at the boys neck but releases him as Sebastian comes to his masters rescue and flees the scene with Alan once again running after him.

Alan has finally caught up with Eric (now dressed in his normal attire) and confronts him about the murders. Eric then tells Alan that it was all on his behalf and tells him of the legend. Alan forgives him and the two decide to run away together. Both shinigami take off their glasses and leaves them behind signifying their resignation as shinigami and Eric promises Alan that he will never kill anyone else.

Eric and Alan stop running as Alan has a attack from his illness but he tells Eric that he is fine and brushes it off. After awhile, Ciel and Sebastian have finally caught up with the two shinigami and orders Sebastian to kill Eric to finally get the Queens order done with. The demon and shinigami fight, but after awhile, Eric moves in to attack Ciel, going in for the kill. Alan then throws himself between Eric and the Earl and takes the blow from Eric's death scythe (because Eric had promised he wouldn't kill anymore) and his cinematic record starts playing, showing his earliest memories of him and Eric.

Devastated by Alans act of sacrifice, Eric lays Alan's body down and mourns for his loss of his friend and says his final words to Sebastian before he cuts him down with Alan's fallen scythe, killing him. As his body falls to rest on Alans, all the souls he collected are released and fall around the scene gracefully down like snow. Making both shinigami's deaths seem...beautiful. With that, Ciel closes the case.
