You know that spooky mansion that is always haunted in those horror movies you watch? That mansion with the broken windows and creaking doors? Where the curtains move, and they always SAY it is the wind coming through some invisible crack in the wall?
Movies make you feel like these places don’t really exist. How could such a lovely mansion become abandoned and dilapidated? Tales of loss, woe, and insanity where a lone figure dies and has no descendants to leave the home to… such tales could never be true, right?
But indeed, such places do exist. Merely turn on your television around Morostide, and you’ll see those “paranormal groups” out “ghost hunting.” They find these abandoned places and hunt down all the ghosts and nightmare pets that are hiding in the walls. They go out of their way to use fancy technology or special rituals. All in the name of advancing some science.
“As if it is really THAT hard to make a few spooks show up,” Jadeyn grumbled as he read from the magazine. Why was he reading this trash? He knew all this stuff was real already.
What was described in this article was his life.
Jadeyn lightly tossed the magazine onto the stack which was slowly growing on his night stand. Other than the clutter on the wooden stand, the room was rather clean and well kept. The wood surfaces were dusted. The bed was made. The floors swept. Even the walls and windows were washed. Not too shabby for a deserted mansion in the woods outside of town.
This room was the best maintained, but the bathroom was somewhat functional, as was the kitchen. Jadeyn had made sure to pick a place that used well water, so there would be no water bills to pay. Sure, he had to use candles for light, and the fireplace for warmth, but overall, it wasn't too bad. In fact, there was only one problem with this colonial beauty.
“Hey... Hey kid, you gonna listen to me now?”
Jadeyn groaned and sat down on his bed. Stupid ghosts.
“Kid, ya gotta listen to me! I was sent here by---”
“I know who sent you: the same “person” that sent all the REST of the ghosts in this place,” Jadeyn cut the ghost off and moved his hands in a sweeping motion. For the most part, the ghosts were, at the moment, hanging out in other parts of the mansion. A ghost rat and a Goseth were the only two present at the moment. The Goseth was an ever-present spirit for Jadeyn. He'd never named the spirit, but he actually liked having the little guy around. It didn't talk... just nodded along when Jadeyn spoke to it.
“All you ghosts come with the same message, and honestly, I'm tired of hearing it. I've been hearing it since I was born. I know already.”
“If ya know, then why aren't ya paying it any mind? Shouldn't ya be getting ready?”
“There are those who are haunted by the things they have done. Haunted by their past. Haunted by those present deeds they sew... Then there are those like me... who are not haunted for anything we have done, but for something we are supposed to do. Something we are meant to do in the future.” Jadeyn sighed and let gravity push him down to lay flat upon his back on the bed. “But...But I can't handle that. I want a normal life. So I will ignore it as long as it takes... as long as I can.”
God can wait.
“Kid... ya can't just ignore---”
“I ran away from all I ever knew. I ran away from anyone I could have hurt. I came here, to the middle of nowhere, just so I wouldn't have to worry about some future that may not even happen! I'll just stay here. I'll protect everyone by hiding from my own future.”
“Kid...”
“My name isn't Kid. My name is Jadeyn. I was given this name by my religious parents who were warned by a priest that I was some sort of bad omen. “God will judge him,” the priest said. And so I was named for that one fact. Then all you ghosts start showing up... my parents flip out... you know what, I don't care. Let Him judge me. I've done nothing wrong, and I don't plan on changing that.”
The spirit was quiet as he seemed to dwell on the words Jadeyn had just spoken. He then nodded and phased through the wall. He would likely just join all the other ghosts by deciding to haunt this quiet place.
Jadeyn closed his eyes for a long moment. When he reopened them, he spotted the Goseth hovering above him. “Hey buddy...” he said softly. The Goseth appeared to have a concerned look on his little spook face. “Don't worry... I promise...”
I promise I won't become the monster God sees in me.
