Starships were meant to fly

hands up and touch the sky

Once upon a time-

“No, no, no, NO! Stories don’t need to start like that. And don’t make me sound so old! I’m only a kid! Gheez.”

/AHEM
Not TOO long ago, a little Jollin was born. But not just any Jollin. No, this one was from a special space colony. Known only as the Children of the Comets, this colony ran amongst the stars. They rode meteors, danced along planets’ rings, and played in star showers.

Among them there were whispers of a special power- the power to whisper to the stars and planets. The colony believed that if a child was born in the Time Between, the tiny bit of time between 11:59:59 PM and 12:00:00 AM on New Year’s Day, they would wield these powers.

But let’s be honest- how often is someone born at that exact time?

Exactly. So it was just a legend- just a fairy tale passed on to entertain the children.

Until Lucila was born. She was born in that magical Time Between, the moment before it truly became the New Year.

The moment she began to function on her own, when she wasn’t clinging to her mother as they ran amongst the stars, the colony began to see things they had never seen in any of their pups before. The Jollin pup was very quiet when she spoke sometimes, so quiet that others could barely hear her. She would sit on stars for hours at a time instead of run, seemingly talking to herself. For a while, the group began to think her insane. They questioned her, worried whether she was fit to live in space or presented a danger to them and herself.

“Lucila! Get down from there this instant!”

The little Jollin stuck her tongue out at her mother, bright tail waving back and forth in taunting. She danced on top of the little star. “Mommy, mommy, cannot catch me! Mommy, mommy, come and fetch me!” She stopped and turned to laugh again. The star suddenly zipped further away from the pup’s jumping parent.

“Lucila I swear you will regret this!” Her mother barked, tail lashing angrily. “Stop whispering to that star and get back here this instant!”

The pup was giggling uncontrollably, rolling around on the star as it zipped around. She couldn’t contain herself. All the stars listened to her, did as she asked, and they loved joining in her games. She laughed as the star bounced off another star and went zinging around in a hectic spiral to regain control. They spiraled a bit longer until the star managed to slow down in a ring of star dust.

Lucila began to sneeze as the star slowly flowed along the trail of debris. She looked back between her fits to see her mother following. She smiled and waved her bright tail. “Hi Mommy! Rae and I just bumped in to another star.” She explained as her mother finally caught hold of the star. The older Jollin glared at her daughter.

“Lucila, you need to stop this. You’ve already caused enough problems with the colony; half of them want to send you away anyways. Why can’t you just act normal, child?”

“Because they don’t want me to have fun, Mommy!” the pup whined, frowning. “I want to play with Rae and the other stars, but everyone at home tells me not to. Is it just because they can’t talk to the stars like I do?”

Her mother sighed and hugged her daughter close. The little star they were on continued to swim through the star dust lazily. For a while they were silent, and Lucila stared down at the infinite space below her. She didn’t want to be like everyone else because they couldn’t speak to the stars. But she didn’t want to be so different either, not if it meant that she needed to leave.

“Lucila just... promise me that you won’t cause so much trouble, okay? I know how much you love the stars, and playing with them, and dancing with them. I don’t want you to lose that.”

The little Jollin nodded eagerly. She would be good, but not TOO good. She smiled; there were still stars to dance with and ride and talk to.

Since that day, Lucila began to slowly integrate herself in to the colony. She caused less havoc when in their midst, but she still played with the stars. She just acted better in public, and the colony began to forget their worries about the little pup's sanity.

Rae followed her around while she played, and even her mother began to play with her more often. As time went on, the little Jollin grew in to and honed her abilities. But she still has a lot to learn! Stars are actually a lot more picky than you would assume. And, as Lucila grows older, she’s learning that the stars are more and more stubborn to her wishes.

But as she grows, she’s more determined. The colony is still fascinated but worried about her powers, so they tend to keep quiet about her abilities. And few will follow her when she went to play with the stars. She still goes on though, doing her own little thing and skipping to her own beat. She loves her stars more than anything.
