Being in the band was both a blessing and a curse. How could he NOT see it as a good thing? Freeflight was more successful than any of them had anticipated, even more than in their most ambitious dreams. Their songs were widely recognized, and they had a solid fanbase that kept their concerts full and invigorating. Luke had never expected to gain this much attention for anything he did. He wasn't half as popular as Matthew was, but he had never been one who needed fame to be worth something.
But he didn't quite fit in with this world, the world of putting on shows, of sex and alcohol and self-promotion. Being a Christian in such an environment was difficult, surrounded by constant pressure to compromise and often subtly put down for believing in God - and sometimes not so subtly. He had learned to keep to himself, not to speak up when he knew something was wrong. He hated conflict, and more preferred to end it than start it.
He was ashamed to not stick up for his beliefs - he was considered the mature one of the band, being married and level-headed and all. But what was the point of saying anything? He couldn't change anyone, not even his long-time best friend; Matthew would never change, ingrained as he was in his lifestyle based on whatever he felt like doing. Luke was supposed to be an example to the others, but he wasn't. He was too afraid of their judgment, and too complacent. He had put out the fire that drove him to be different.
At least he had found a friend in Amber, someone who shared his beliefs. The difference was, she was bold enough to act on them.
