Ever since he was little, Peter was a thief
He'd steal bottle caps and jewelry that were 50 cents each
Shiny knick knacks and stones and Mardi Gras beads.
But what he loved most were the sweets his mother would buy
And he'd steal every piece and leave nothing behind.

His mother was amused at her son's devious schemes
For he knew where she hid all of her delicious treats.
So she'd say with a shake of her head and with a soft sigh
"My darling little Peter, my dear naughty Magpie
Save some of those sweets for your father and I."

So from that day on from the playground and at home
Peter was known as Magpie, the thief of fool's gold.
Though his folks would titter at his mischievous behavior
No goods lost were of worth, no harm was done
Except for those sweets that would quickly be none.
