My 17th Birthday
"Happy Birthday, Michelle!"
>I turned my head towards the direction of my mother's voice and smiled, "Thanks Mom," I could sense the excitement in her voice. I immediately knew she had some sort of surprise and was dying to tell me. "What's up?" I calmly asked, knowing that asking this would be her excuse to tell me everything.
She hesitated at first, "Oh, nothing…" She lied, as she came over to brush my hair. This was our morning ritual. Every morning she would come into my room, brush my hair free of tangles and pick out a dress for me to wear for the day.
"Mhmm? If you say s--"
"OH Honey, we planned a surprise party for you!" She quickly blurted out before I could even finish.
I knew this was coming. I had overheard her and my brother, Jake, talking about it the other day. Even though I knew what to expect, I still didn't know how to respond. "Wow, thanks Mom. That's really nice of you guys... I was kind of hoping that we'd have a small party this year with just you, me, Jake and Dad. I hope that's okay."
"Oh..." I could hear the disappointment in her voice, "Well if that's what you want, Honey. This is your special day after all." Without finishing my hair or picking out a dress, she quickly got up and ran downstairs. Probably to warn the others about the sudden change of plans. I feel bad for ruining her hard work, but I just don't like all the attention focused on me.
I took my time getting ready and spent extra time feeding and petting my bunny, Caramel. Jake gave him to me last year for my Sweet Sixteen. Probably the best present I've ever received, although Mom and Dad weren't too pleased. Finally, I decided to head downstairs so I went to my closet and picked a dress that was flowy and relatively short since I wanted to go to the garden today. I found my way downstairs and followed the scent of buttermilk pancakes. My favorite.
"Happy Birthday!!" Mom, Jake and Dad echoed in unison.
"Thanks guys." I said as I took my usual seat at the table. "The pancakes smell great, Mom."
"Thanks Honey. We all got you presents this year. We hope you like them."
"Here's my present." Jake said as he shoved the
gift in front of me."Something to keep Caramel company... Kinda."It was a squishy plushie of a bunny. I could feel the soft fur and there was even a fluffy bow tied around its neck. "I love it. Thank you so much, Jake."
I opened the present from Dad next. It was a small box and when I opened
the lid he said, "It's a necklace of your favorite animal, butterflies! It's purple and it actually matches the dress you chose today." He picked it up out of the box and placed it gently around my neck, "There... Beautiful.""Thanks a lot, Dad." I said happily as I gave him a hug, which prompted to kiss me on my head.
"Anything for my little girl. Happy Seventeenth Birthday."
The last present was from my Mom. I carefully removed the wrapping paper and when I finished unwrapping it, I could immediately tell that it was a book. I could smell the fresh
scent of untouched pages. I opened the book and flipped through it, feeling the paper on each page, "Uhm, thanks Mom, it's really nice, but I don't think I c--""It's a diary, Honey." She quickly interrupted. "I thought that maybe you'd like to have a momento of your thoughts and experiences and that you could share it with your kids in the future..." I sat there holding the diary, contemplating how to respond. "Please give it a chance, Michelle. Even if just for a few months."
I could tell that this was really important to her and I didn't want to hurt her feelings even though I was quite reluctant to start a diary. "Thanks Mom, it's a very thoughtful present and I'll definitely give it a chance."
She was very happy to hear this and I was relieved that I didn't disappoint her. After indulging on a delicious breakfast, I grabbed my flower basket, placed the diary inside it and left the house to go to my favorite spot in the garden, the flower patch right under the willow tree. I sat down under the shade of the mighty tree and leaned my back against its massive trunk. I sat there in silence for a while, enjoying the cool spring breeze and listening to the joyful chirps of the various birds that lived in our garden.
Eventually I decided to open the diary. I was still hesitant and confused as to why my mom thought that this was a good idea. She must've had her reasons. I picked up the pen that came with the diary and flipped the book open to the first page -- Oh well, here goes nothing...
March 24th, 2012
Another year older, but not much has changed in my world. My birthday was very mellow and peaceful this year. Just the way I wanted it. This diary was actually given to me as a present by my mother. I don't expect to write in it every day. My life isn't that exciting... Perhaps whenever something interesting or monumental happens to me.
I do have some goals that I want to accomplish before I turn eighteen. I'll write them here in my first entry to keep track of my progress throughout the year:
1) Make a new friend
2) Learn how to bake brownies
3) Go on a date
4) Fly a kite
5) Get a job

That's it. Not much else to write. I do want to describe myself in every entry and see how much I change throughout the year. As of right now, my name is Michelle and this is who I am:
