Ooh, penguins!

There once lived a little girl who wanted nothing more in her life than to be a penguin. She adored them, and spent every penny of her weekly pocket money on anything and everything penguin related that she could find. Her most prized possession was the big penguin coat her Mother bought her for her eighth Birthday. Mumble (as she had come to be known, because of how much she loved 'Happy Feet') loved her coat so much that sometimes she even refused to take it off when she slept. A little over a year later the day came when her Mother decided that the coat had been worn enough, so she took it from her. The little girl was devastated, so much so that she vowed not to talk to her Mummy ever again until she got her coat back. Her mother tried to persuade her otherwise, but whenever she tried to talk to her, the little girl simply huffed and puffed, then crossed her arms and walked away. This upset the Mother greatly; even though she knew it was just a phase her daughter was going through, it still hurt her to have everything she said ignored.

Two weeks passed before things changed in their house. Mumble's parents had been shouting at each other a lot, and she knew her Mummy was upset for a different reason now, but still Mumble didn't go back on her word; she didn't have her coat back, and so she wouldn't speak to her Mummy. While her parents were shouting, she spent most of her time in her room, hiding in her bed and hugging her biggest penguin doll - Alfie.

The shouting in the house grew and grew over the next few days, until finally she came home from school one day to find piles of boxes being loaded into a strange car that belonged to neither her Mummy nor her Daddy. She frowned at the strangers walking in an out of her house so freely, and hoped they hadn't been in her room to mess up her Mumble bedsheets. She went into the house, determined to find her Daddy and question him, but was stopped in the kitchen by the sight of her parents standing in awkward silence, seemingly waiting for her to come home. She raised her eyebrow and frowned, then turned to her Father and began to ask, "Daddy, what's going o-"

It was her Mother (who she still wasn't talking to) who interrupted her. "Sweetie, your Daddy isn't going to be living with us anymore. He's-" Mumble's Mother stopped talking once she saw the horrid glare her daughter was sending her. It took all of the Mothers willpower not to burst into tears, so she simply cast a pleading glance at Mumble's Father.

Sighing heavily, he lowered himself down to Mumble's level and held one of her hands in between his, smiling sadly at her. "Carrie, sweetie, I'm not going to be living with you and Mummy anymore. Now, just because I'm not going to be with you all the time, doesn't mean I'm going to love you any less than I do now. I love you and Mummy more than anything in the whole world, but me and Mummy just need to be apart for a little bit so that we can have some space."

Mumble understood most of what her Daddy was saying and she knew she was supposed to feel sad. She glanced up at her Mother, who now had tears streaming down her face, and felt a slight twinge deep in her heart as she realised tears were beginning to prick at her eyes too. Her lip quivered as she turned back to face her Father, then leant forward to hug him, burying her face in his shirt. She clung to him for what seemed like an eternity, before she felt him gently pull away from her, and heard her Mother leave the room, holding back a sob as she left.

"I have to go now, sweetie. You can stay with me every single weekend if you want, and whenever you want to see me, just let Mummy know, okay?"

Mumble nodded at her Father and blinked back another round of tears, as she stepped back and stared up at him, her eyes misty and her heart heavy. Her father ruffled her hair as he stood up, then walked out of the door without looking back, a single tear rolling down his cheek.

Mumble stood in the kitchen of what was now just her Mother's house, and didn't know how she should feel. She knew she should feel sad, but she just felt a little empty, like there was a piece of her that should be there but wasn't. She heard her Mummy shuffling around upstairs, but paid her no notice; how could she be upstairs when Daddy had just left? Didn't she love Daddy? Mumble felt tears threatening to flow again, so she stomped her way into the living room to peer out of the window, hoping that she wouldn't cry again when she watched her Fathers car drive away for good.

But she did. She felt hot tears roll down her cheeks as she watched the car turn the corner. Her lip quivered, but before she could turn to run upstairs to hug Alfie, a familiar coat was placed over her shoulders. She stiffened, then delicately slipped her arms into the sleeves, sniffing to try and stop her nose from running. She smiled a little and then turned quickly to wrap her arms around her Mothers waist, burying her face into her chest.

When Mumble felt her Mother do the same to her, she knew, in her heart, that everything would be okay. Somehow.
