Are you still back home? I.. I hope I see you again someday.
Tell Dad that I'm sorry for everything..

Father

... I miss you. You were always so strong and knew what to do.
Why can't you be here to help me now..

Mother

We didn't see that you were sick until it was too late, and.. we didn't call fast enough, and..
Oh, there's so much we could have done.. so much that could have never happened.

Merel

You're a sweet little thing, I'm glad I have you as a cousin..
Keep yourself safe when you're defending home, alright? I'd hate to see you die out there.

Faith

Everything's going to be okay. Please, just trust Mommy when she says that.
We'll turn everything around..

Passerby

Aran

Thank you, so much, for everything you've done for us. Like things like food, or telling us where to go.

Buddi

I never ate much fish back home.. never liked it much. But if it put bread on the table, I guess..
I wish I was good at something of that.

Yuriha

I-I-I... uhm...
There's no words that'd come close to show how grateful I am to you. If you hadn't helped persuade me to go see the psychiatrist, well.. I'd probably be just a bit worse off.
But being a bit better off is still fantastic, and it's a lot for somebody to do that for me..

It was summer, the sun beating down on the city at a steady 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
To children and the adequately-dressed, it was a pleasant day, worth spending outside.

Cars drove by with huffs of exhaust, carrying passengers to whatever attraction they sought to spend their time on today. People from all walks of life strode the sidewalks, most of them dressed as to stay cool, some holding things like water bottles or ice cream.
With mid-afternoon having rolled around, many were done with work by now, and were going home to see their loved ones, maybe to spend the remainder of the wonderful day with them.

But to her, the warmth reminded her just how much she missed home.
Even in the summer, it was only lukewarm at best there, never anything unbearable.

This place was nothing like Rikovska, even if she had read about this city in particular being at least a bit similar. Those similarities were just the fact that it had buildings and homes, that the population was over a couple thousand, and all of those other obvious things about cities.

Sareil was an unforgiving place for anybody new to the area, anybody trying to scrape out a living, and anyone who couldn't adapt fast enough to the life in the big city.

She knew this firsthand, and it lead to reinforce her desire to return back to her home country.

It was an act of stupidity, leaving her family and home to try and support them. She hadn't been ready to try and start up a job, when desperation and sadness fueled her after her mother's death.

Why did she have to be so weak and let emotions take control? The world had no place for that.

Watching uninterestedly as a gaggle of children congregated in the grass on the other side of the road, Myiliki looked back to her knitting, being sure not to lose her place.

There was a soft sound of yearning from the little girl that sat to her left, who had previously been sipping apple juice from a cup before putting it aside to gesture at the other children.

".. I'm sorry, Faith. Not now."

The brown-haired child's voice trailed off in a defeated whine when she got this answer, softly uttering a few jumbled words before returning to sipping juice and looking at the picture book in her lap.

Her mother watched this reaction with a muted unhappiness, the knitting needles still clicking in her hands even when she wasn't looking.

She had made too many mistakes so far in her life, and didn't want to make any more.

Stowing away on a cargo ship only to find out that the city she sought was not what she expected, going to that city with little knowledge of the language spoken here, walking alone on a dark night only to attract the attention of a predatory stranger.. they were all irreversible things that could have been prevented.

It felt like she was being overprotective, but Myiliki was afraid to let Faith go and play with other kids.

Would they treat her funny for being from a different country? What about having a mother, but no father? Would they be nice to her to begin with?

They were all ungrounded worries that she was having trouble overcoming. It was important for a child's development to be able to see others their own age, but she was so scared that something would go wrong, something she didn't see beforehand.

She hated that fear of possibilities. It was the only thing that lead her and her daughter to live another day, being careful of everything and learning from past experiences.. but at the same time, it prevented her from making any progress.
Her own fears of being misunderstood or manipulated had prevented her from finding ways to earn money, which made the idea of getting back home an impossible one.

But there had to be a way, somehow. Was nothing impossible if you tried hard enough?
At least, that's what her older brother had always told her when she was ready to give up.

Putting down her knitting and carefully putting it into her bag, Myiliki stood, taking one of her daughter's hands in her own.

"Come along, Faith," she uttered, waiting for the child to come to terms with this before taking the relinquished book and sippy cup of juice.

"I'm.. going to go get money, so we don't have to sleep out here any more."

"How's Mommy gonna get money?"

Myiliki paused before reaching down, heaving Faith into her arms before starting down the sidewalk, remembering a small pet shop a few blocks away. She had raised chickens as a child, so she had gone in the store before to see the birds.

"Mommy's going to get a job.. so we don't have to worry any more. If it all goes well, we.. we might be able to go home someday."
