Now this was just your average creature of the sea except for one thing....
He wished nothing more then to fly.
He was born into a small pod, several mothers and their offspring from the previous summer. The bulls had long departed from the group for deeper water, leaving the pod to fend for itself. This little one was odd in itself for he was born in the coldest of winters instead of summer, but it wasn't the strangest thing. Babies were always born molten and brown, growing paler with age but little Sam as his mother called him, was whiter then the ice that bobbed in the waters over their head.
He grew up slowly, feeding off his mother's milk and the occasional cod she was able to catch for him. Food was scarce this time of year and she had to work harder then the others to feed her growing calf. While he bobbed in the small cutaways the ice provided one day, he was started to realize that there was another ocean that sat over their heads. Frightened, his mother explained to him that it would not fall and it was simply what was known as the sky.
But the little narwhal couldn't help but be curious and the more he stared up at it, the more he wanted to visit that strange world above him. Be content with what you have little one, that world is not for our kind, his mother warned him and indeed, it was impossible. A ocean of air that his small flippers could not reach no matter how hard he twisted and flapped them.
The small animals that swam this great ocean of air noticed his struggles one day and one flew down to the edge of the ice, staring at him with its tiny eyes.
Why do you struggle and flap that way? Are you sick?
I am trying to reach your world above, if I flap hard enough, I know I can make it.
That is silly, you don't have wings to take you into the sky. It is not for your kind.
When asked what were wings, the little plover opened up her own and showed the silly narwhale.
So that's what I''m lacking. If I had feathers, then I could make it. I know I could!
The little bird could not convince him otherwise and left, shaking her head at the foolish gesture. Nothing could tell Sam otherwise, even his own mother. So the little one began to collect feathers, some from dying birds on the ocean's waves. Others left them behind, by their own means or by the red stain that now soaked the tip of his horn. He spent hours, using every amount of sticky objects to glue the feathers together and little by little, the narwhal had created his multicolored wings. He took great pride in his achievement, even when he realized that the pod had long since gone and he was alone. It would not matter, for he would taste the sky above and swim through its white mist!
But the little plover had left out a important fact about wings. Something that even Sam could not get around.
Try as he might, his wings sank around his large body, he could not lift them.
For wet wings do not fly....
