He's been a lot of different things along the way; he remembers starting life off in a permanent gloom, barely able to lift himself from the dusty ground beneath his feet.
He isn't sure, exactly, how he escaped that life - there's a big gap where he doesn't really remember much of anything at all. But then suddenly he was aware again and everything had changed . . . but not really so much as all that, come to it.
For the most part though, things are better now. He's interested in seeing everything there is to see and he's done some quite frightening, but ultimately worthwhile, things along the way to help ensure that.
He traded a ransom in gold to a scarred old kumos merchant, an ancient being with few remaining teeth and even fewer remaining scruples. But the kumos had had what he needed so Orotha screwed up his courage and did business with the old one. And the elixir, soft and sweet smelling, even though it had burned like acid on the way down, had been his.
Not long after that he met Euclid; they became friends easily. Euclid too was fascinated by change and he wanted to know anything and everything Orotha could remember. They spent long nights talking over the places each had been, sharing undoubtedly embellished tales of bravery and adventure in exotic places.
Before long Orotha began experimenting with his friend's strange machine. It went extremely well and for a time he lost himself in the unexpected joy of flight, delighting himself by soaring through the air, scattering rainbows in his wake.
Somewhere along the way he began saving pieces of his life. He collected souvenirs from distant lands, giving them pride of place in his home. He also began writing his memories and his experiences down. He filled an entire room, almost to overflowing, with his scribblings.
Soon enough he became restless again, the unexplained longing for change taking more and more of his attention, and he went back to the bazaar where he'd once done business. He wasn't quite ready to give flight up, but he wanted to experience it in a new way, wanted to fly though the water as easily as he now soared though the air.
An elixir was found, payment was made, and soon Orotha spent his time gliding down cascading rivers, leaping easily over obstacles of rock and wood, scales glittering in the sun.
The freedom of the water, its sleekness over his skin, was entrancing, but Orotha soon found he missed the glittering rainbows, missed the bubbling surfeit of joy they brought.
One bright and sunny morning he saw the answer to his problems, saw a way to keep the joy of the water while returning to the rainbows. Orotha set out for the bazaar, his savings tucked safely away, and soon enough he was back in the water, leaping from place to place, delighting in the glittering ribbons of shimmering colors following after.
One day the desire to change will come again, it always does. But for now he is content.
