sldkfjlkfg thank you Yoshi ;;

She was scared. The girl was no coward when it came to admitting her feelings and she would be the first to admit that she was scared. Her heart rapidly pounded against her chest as she silently crept forward, the ruined buildings of what once was a beautiful city surrounded her as if to trap her within its tomb. One hand rose as she brushed off the sweat that had begun to collect on her brow, dirt smearing across her forehead and coloring it orange. The faint buzzing sound of static could be heard over the headset that clasped tightly around her head, the voices of her fellow comrades comforting her by a small amount. Her left hand grasped the pistol that she carried with her tightly, her blue eyes scanning the ruined horizon as the sun beat down and created a haze that blurred her vision. Her eyes narrowed as she attempted to focus behind the lens of the goggles she wore, her senses all on high alert as she lowered the volume of the headset, her companions' voices becoming no more than a whisper. The silence seemed to permeate the dusty air and only the faint caws of crows could be heard from a distance, but the quiet unnerved her all the same. She took a small step forward, wincing when the sound of the gravel underneath her boot seemed to echo loudly in the barren landscape.

A scrape from close by immediately put her on high alert as she raised her gun, her eyes narrowing as she turned her body around to pinpoint the location of the disturbance. There seemed to be nothing at first, but the shiver of fear and anxiety told her otherwise. She waited quietly, her breaths coming out in rapid but barely audible pants as her instincts screamed at her to run while her mind resisted the urge. And, THERE. A low hiss came from underneath the debris of a collapsed building as another and much more noticeable scrape could be heard, the obvious sound of claws dragging over crumbled concrete becoming more frequent and desperate. The rubble that was covering the thing began to shake as it tries to struggle loose, loud hisses of frustration bubbling from its throat as the thing became more desperate to free itself. Her hands shook as a grotesque head popped out from underneath the rubble, its single large eye swiveling in her direction as it opened its gaping maw to hiss at her. She quickly aimed and pulled the trigger with almost practiced ease, the echo of a shot rang through the silent ruins, the screech of the monster's pain filling the air before the sound gurgled off as its blood flooded its lungs, its head falling limply backwards from the force of the gunshot.

She panted, her shoulders heaving with every breath she took as her eyes dilated in fear and shock. Her entire body froze in fear as another hiss sounded behind her while the distinct blur of another creature crawling from amidst the ruins could be seen in her peripherals. Turning swiftly, she clumsily dodged as the creature from behind leapt at her, wicked claws outstretched while its maw was stretched wide open, its sharp teeth glinting in the bright sunlight as a loud and guttural screech escaping from its throat. She fired two shots at the creature, one catching its arm while the other hit its back, its growls of rage and agony filled the air as the other creature pounced at her. Rolling away from the attack as its claws met the gravel, she readied her gun but gasped as she felt a blow to her back and the crunch of concrete reached her ears as her body fell to the ground. A loud hiss could be heard from above her as the creature on her back pressed harder against her spine while the other monsters recovered from their failed attacks and circled around her fallen body. She was paralyzed as her breaths came out in gasps, not only from the weight from the creature above her but also by her own damned fear as angry screeches and growls filled the air.

And it was this fear that would get her killed as she closed her eyes and waited for the final strike...

Training simulation ended. Beginning training diagnostics.

Claire Ferris slowly opened her eyes, the sight of the red-tinted glass covering of the pod she had been placed in filled her vision. The case opened with a barely audible hiss as she sat up and stretched her legs before fully exiting the pod. Her boots clicked against the clean white linoleum floor, her arms stretched above her head to relieve the tension that had built up from being encased within the machine while her frantic heartbeat steadied into a dull rhythm. The faint clicking of heels coming closer to her immediately attracted her attention, her gaze raising from the colorless tiled floor to fall on a stern-looking woman. The woman tutted under her breath as she shook her head slowly at Claire, the loose wisps of blonde hair that escaped from her neat bun flicking slightly from the movement as she drew closer to the other woman.

"You failed this one as well, Claire." The woman said with a tone of disappointment, her hand raising to push the glasses on her nose higher. "Even though your training records are above average, your simulation records are absolutely abysmal. The board will just send you back to training camp if you continue to fail like this."

"I know, Jaqueline." Claire responded, her eyes lowering to stare at Jaqueline's fancy heels. "But I can't help but panic whenever I see those things."

Jaqueline sighed as she placed a hand on Claire's shoulders, her gaze shining with understanding at the girl's predicament.

"You need to learn how to relax instead of seizing up in fear." She said quietly, her hand squeezing the other girl's shoulder in a futile attempt to comfort her. "I know the situation is a lot more different than what you experienced at the training camp, but you must learn how to face danger and be able to act rationally. You have so much potential, Claire, but I can't help you if you do not learn. Get some rest and we'll try again in a few days and try to relax, alright?"

Claire nodded, her eyes still refusing to look up. Jaqueline sighed as she gave the girl one more comforting squeeze before turning and leaving, the sounds of her boots echoing further away from the unmoving girl. Claire closed her eyes as she slowly exhaled, her shoulders relaxing as she willed away her worries. She was safe for now, but her worries never ceased as her brow wrinkled at the thought of her failed attempt and her future test. Jaqueline made it sound so easy to kill those creatures, but it was much easier said than done.

After all, those creatures had once been human as well...

In the year 3013, a pandemic discovered to be an extraterrestrial viral infection infested the planet. Caused by foreign alien species from a dying planet, these 'creatures' sought to establish a new home world and chose our planet as its soon to be 'host'.

Humans infected by this viral strain mutated into abominations, slaves to the insanity of ridding the world of what was once their own kin. They became mindless drones and only served to forward these aliens' ambitions.

We have gone to war against the Morthas, the name given to this alien species by the scientists who discovered the origins of this virus.

We can only hope and pray that our future will be safe...

Claire Ferris had been like any other teenager before her entire world was literally torn apart before her eyes. She had loving parents and even an obnoxious little brother who was 13 while she was 18. Claire could still remember her parents' proud smiles and her brother's annoying smirk as she graduated from high school, her eyes bright with the prospect of the future as she threw her graduation cap with the rest of her class, the thought of entering college bringing a grin to her face.

But that summer was the last she'd ever see of her old life. Supernatural...things of some sort began to appear on the earth, transforming several humans into abominations while others died from the strain of the virus. The world fell into chaos as humans attempted to fight the unknown force, but it just wasn't enough.

She still remembered that day, her back against the wall while her eyes were wide with shock as she saw her very own family become the very things that the world had begun to fear. Claire could only stare on, her limbs paralyzed as she recalled the loud screams her parents released as tears streaked down their faces, their limbs bending unnaturally as decay spread across their bodies, their grotesque forms becoming more monstrous with every passing second. She could remember the hisses they released as they turned towards her brother first, immediately killing him with a flurry of limbs and loud gnashing of sharp teeth while her brother screamed on in agony and begging for help from his sister, but Claire had been unable to do anything and oh why hadn't she helped him? It didn't take long before her parents (no, not her parents they were beasts monsters things, but no longer her parents) turned towards her, their mouths red with the blood from the remains of her brother, the faint gurgling of blood could still be heard coming from the body. A hiss was the only warning before they both leapt, claws outstretched and teeth glinting with blood at their own daughter before two gunshots rang through the room and the bodies fell, blood spurting from their heads as drops landed on her face.

She still remembered her own scream as her eyes lifted to see a woman in a black uniform, her gun still smoking from the shots while her other hand raised to flick back the blonde hair that had begun to escape from the loose bun she had tied it in.

"Come on, you have to get out of here." She said with a calm voice as she tried to coax the shocked girl into moving. But Claire only sat there dumbly, her eyes wide with tears while drops of blood from the now cooling corpses fell from her cheeks in red streaks. The woman sighed in exasperation as she grasped the unresponsive girl's arm and heaving her upright onto her feet.

"They're dead now," The woman said softly as her eyes stared straight at Claire's own eyes as she began to drag the still numb girl outside and towards and armored vehicle. "And there's nothing more you can do. Come on, we need to get you to a safe place."

The rest of the events after that became a blur; she didn't remember arriving at the guarded city of Atlas that had been formed in a desperate counteraction from the alien attack. She didn't remember how she managed to get her own living space or the people she met or who had taken care of her wounds. The only things she could still remember were her family's faces and her brother's corpse and the fact that a woman named Jaqueline had saved her from her pa...no, monsters.

Claire didn't know when or what had happened, but she did remember the day she entered the training academy to become one of the soldiers who would combat against the threat. She remembered standing in a musty trainee uniform while standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other people her age, her once frightful gaze sharp with concentration and with purpose.

Claire didn't remember much about what had happened after her old life ended and her new life began, but she did remember what she wanted to do with her second chance.
