Mew? A reader? Well you must be, since you’re actually reading this. Now I didn’t write this, mind you, but my owner did. She writes a lot about me and my so-called adventures. Me? I’m just a simple cat living his day-to-day life. If you do happen to have some spare time though, I’d be happy to share my story with you.
Dear diary...
I was born on the 2nd of September in a barn, together with my five siblings. We weren’t strong, but I was the oldest and therefore the strongest. I don’t remember that period well, except for a few incidents … all thanks to that dog! This creature also lived at the barn and while he was very enthusiastic and playful, he scared me. He did things. One day my sister disappeared while playing with him and it turned out he decided to hide her in the woods and she got lost. Or another time when he was playing with youngest brother … the dog got reckless and at some point my brother just stopped moving. We moved not too long after that incident.
We were moved inside the house and one by one my siblings were taken away by strange people. No one seemed interested in me and eventually I was the only one left. That was a scary time, because they didn’t want to keep me and nobody wanted me … what if I ended up alone? More days went by and then something happened. The people locked me in some kind of box and I was moved as well! After quite a while I found myself in a small room with two people staring at me like I was made of something really tasteful. One was a young woman and the other a young man. The room wasn’t big, but at the time neither was I, so it didn’t matter. It didn’t smell like the barn at all, but it wasn’t unpleasant either. Actually, it smelled a little familiar as well. A white flash appeared and there she was, my little brother! We jumped on each other, full of joy, and played for hours. The guy living next door adopted my little brother, so we could play a lot together. Those were really nice days, we played a lot and it was easy getting used to my new home.
One day, my sister didn’t show. It didn’t matter how much I cried out, he didn’t show. My owners gave me a lot of attention, but it was quite lonely without him. I heard the young woman talking about how my brother had gotten really ill; he suddenly collapsed, was dehydrated and vomiting a lot. It sounded horrible. He never returned.
Dear diary...
So I had to get used to being alone. Turns out, I don’t like being alone, so I spend a lot of time with my owners. They were sweet and gave me a lot of attention. When they were gone, I would sit in front of the window. Not to wait for them – I couldn’t really see them from there – but to look at the outside world. There was a whole new world on the other side of the glass and I couldn’t wait to explore that world. My owners never let me go outside, but I spend hours upon hours in front of that window staring at everything I couldn’t reach.
So everything was great. I was happy and very fond of my owners, who in turn were very fond of me as well. It all changed in a matter of hours. One day I started feeling ill. I felt warm and cold, my vision was slightly blurry and I just couldn’t muster up the energy to do anything. The young woman noticed me and tried to get me some water. I just couldn’t. It really worried me, because it made me remember how my brother suddenly felt ill and then just disappeared! The young female wrapped me inside a towel and put me inside this box again and then I was moved. We arrived at this funny smelling place and, since I didn’t have the energy to climb out of the box, my owner lifted me out. A long-bearded man gave me some shots – it didn’t hurt – then inside the box again and back to the small room. I started feeling better after that, my energy returned and I was hungry and thirsty again. Still, my owners fed me these horrible pills for several days. I didn’t have a choice, but they were disgusting! I started feeling better and better and a few weeks later … I had almost forgotten it had ever happened. I never knew I had been really close to dying that day.
Dear diary...
This was a glorious day! They opened the window. I was so excited and wanted to jump outside right away. I smelled all these unfamiliar smells and I wanted to explore! But something was in front of the opening; I could smell the outside world, I felt the breeze, but some sort of net was between me and there. I pushed and pulled, but the net wasn’t budging. My owners seemed pleased. At night, I would secretly push and pull more. One day, it would be me who won that battle!
It started getting colder and colder. The breeze was harder and at one point, the entire green outside world was white. My owners opened the door and I didn’t hesitate for one second. I ran and leaped and … DAMMIT! Should not have done that, should definitely not have done that. This white stuff that covered everything? It is cold and yucky and it tastes weird and it was very unpleasant. I went inside as quickly as I could and decided to wait it out. Wait, till the white stuff was gone and everything was green again.
Every night I was still working on the stupid net, pulling and pushing. It didn’t budge at first, but the longer I worked on it, the more it seemed to be moving. And one night, long after the snow had disappeared, the net finally gave in. I was outside. Finally! Now it was time to explore all those smells … the grass, those trees, the bugs. I hardly knew where to begin. I took my sweet time exploring the neighborhood. I caught the smell of another cat and I followed it. Then I heard some bugs flying and I simply had to chase them (needless to say that I won!). Quite some time had passed and the sun was disappearing. I was getting a little hungry, so I decided to return home. Thing was though, I had no clue where I was or how to get back to where I came from. There were too many smells in the air and I just didn’t know where to go. I was lost.
My owners must have looked for me everywhere and I looked for them. I couldn’t pick up their smell and wandered around aimlessly hoping to catch something familiar. Finally I found a nice garden where I could hide under a bush while it was raining. It’d been several days and I started to wonder what would happen if I couldn’t return. One particularly windy and rainy day someone came and picked me up though. They put me in a box, fed me and kept me warm. I was happy … but I still missed my owners. Had they forgotten me?
The next day they came though! I was so happy to see them and they were really happy as well. They hugged me and petted me for ages. Then they put me in that box again – usually I dislike the box, because it is obviously meant to torture cats, but now it was something familiar and it might take me back to the place where I belonged. Back home I was still petted and they took such good care of me. I was nice to know that they missed me, because secretly … I had missed them a whole lot as well!
Dear diary...
I will now tell you one of the most awful things my owners have put me through. It all started with that box again. They took me to the funny smelling place I had been earlier, when I had been really sick. The long-bearded man took me out of the box and put me into another box, my owners petted me for a bit and then … they left! I already was pretty upset, because they decided not to feed me that morning, but now they just left me in this place? Didn’t they want me anymore? And the worst was yet to come.
I don’t remember much of that day. They gave me something and I fell asleep real quick. When I woke up later, it felt like I slept for hours and I still was really drowsy. What I do remember from that was the itchy feeling ‘down there’. All I could think of was that they hurt me – they made me go to sleep and then they hurt me. I was upset, but my body wasn’t moving the way I wanted it to. My legs could hardly carry the weight of my body and my head was foggy. So I decided to sleep some more, since the box was still confining me. When I woke up the next time, my owners were right there, heaving me over from the funny smelling box to my own nice box. I took another nap when we returned home. When I woke up the next time, my body felt much more my own and my head was less foggy so I tried walking around. Of course jumping was still out of the question (I tired …), but I recovered quickly. It was a bad day, but like the last time when I visited the long-bearded man, all was forgotten before long. But it did mark a significant chance in my owners, since the outside world was no longer strictly forbidden. From that day forward, they started walking me outside on a leash. Sometimes they even put me inside the garden, still on the leash but I had a lot of wiggle room there. I could finally explore the outside world!
Dear diary...
Before long I got tired of the leash. I wanted to explore more thoroughly but this stupid leash kept me from doing that. The young woman noticed this, but it seems she didn’t want to let me leash go. The young male on the other hand just sat down and let the leash go. I could walk around more freely. Sure, I still had this leash following me around, but at least I wasn’t tied to my owner anymore. And soon my female owner did the same, seeing how I didn’t get lost again. Ha. But the leash was annoying and it got stuck a lot.
