The Many Eyes That Observe The Sins of Them
Suspend is a longstanding member of a cult called Paradise Lost and rumor has it he has been around since its inception. He used to look quite different as when he started his position he had shimmering black scales and bright blue eyes. His horns had been adorned with alluring gemstones and lined with gold. His body was also encrusted in various rubies, sapphires and emeralds from his personal hoard. He stood tall and proud since he was one of the few "titanic" family members that Paradise Lost had at the time. He had quickly rose through the ranks and became the sole owner of the title of "God's Guardian". Suspend's job was to keep unwanted members out of a special chamber used by the current god that they use for meditation and keeping an uninterrupted eye on their "family". He faithfully served this role for apparent centuries.Unfortunately as time passed, Suspend aged rather quickly for his species. He wondered if it was because he had become a part of this new "family" and had forfeited his lifespan for such an action. It was still a better option than living with the other dragons in their little self-centered utopia. When he had become of age he had sought the place in search of a mate and hopefully starting a family. Unfortunately he came from a family who cared not for jewels and and gold as they had been running on survival mode ever since he hatched. Their hides fetched a high price and not to mention if a dragon had the aforementioned goodies attached to the scales that they were worth even more on the black market. Suspend was rejected quite a lot and bullied often by most of dragon kind in their little utopia.
After a year of living in this place and trying his best to make friends and making his best attempts at trying to court some lovely dragons, he finally got fed up and decided he'd be better off on his own. He couldn't return home after all since his family had left and he was sure hunters would be lurking about while searching for them. His hide now had large, circular shaped gemstones embedded within and all over his back and even one in his forehead. He was basically a dead dragon walking once he was outside of that protective stronghold. He didn't seem to mind though as death had been on the forefront of his mind for a long time now. Might as well patiently sit somewhere and wait for the reaper to take him away. He found a nice little clearing a few miles away and plopped down in the soft grass as it waved in the breeze. It could hide him if he laid down though he doubted the need would arise anytime soon. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Now it was time for patience. It wasn't long until a stranger's voice broke the silence, making Suspend jump.
"Greetings young dragon."
"Uh, greetings."
"Didn't mean to frighten you, hehe."
The stranger that spoke soon closed the distance between them. Suspend observed them as a large black and green dog-like creature with a funny little halo glowing above his head. Their fiery eyes burned straight through his ocean blue ones and felt as if they pierced into his soul. The dragon was unsure what to make of this being as their look was terrifying but their voice was quite calm and nurturing.
"Ah, where are my manners? My name is Ophius. Yours?"
"Suspend."
"Suspend eh? Quite an interesting name."
"Mum never was the best at names."
"Hehe, there are worse out there. You're one of the lucky ones in this case."
"Ha! Suppose so.""Say, you don't happen to be searching for a family, do you?"
Suspend's left ear flicked at this question and he took note as Ophius seemed to copy him, waiting for a response. He had heard of an of group making the recruiting rounds. Sometimes young dragons go missing after being seen with such members. He had to keep his wits about him.
"Well, not really, no."
"Is that so?"
"Well, I traveled to an area that protects my kind. A place where we all can mingle and such. I..."
"Can't seem to make any friends can you? Everyone judges ever so harshly for your upbringing."
Suspend began to panic. How did he know? Could he truly see into his soul with those burning eyes? Could he read his mind? Was he THAT easy to read?
"Hehe, was I right? Your aura gives it away. You're nervous. Constantly."
"I guess I am sometimes... Maybe just a little bit."
"You're more than welcome to join my family if you desire."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yes. We don't judge. There's plenty of others like you too. I think you will get along nicely with my people."
"Well... Uh..."
Suspend didn't answer for a bit and Ophius patiently waited once again for an answer. Those damn eyes! They stared right through him and into his soul! He despised such a thing but paired with this calming voice! It was agonizing!
He eventually agreed to let Ophius take him to his home and become one with this "family". If worse came to worse then maybe the rumors would be true and he could perish within the confines of this new home and not have to suffer any longer. But things could also look up for him as well. What if Ophius had a few dragons hanging about that Suspend could meet? Wouldn't that be lovely? He remained skeptical but hopeful as he followed the wolf god back to his domain.
Ophius had proven his kindness to Suspend as years passed. The dragon did indeed like this new family as everyone was pretty much kind to him or at least respectful if they didn't like him. After given the rank of "God's Guardian" he spent his days sitting by the meditative room, guarding the door vigilantly. Unlike Ophius though, age was not as kind to him. Suspend's eyes were beginning to fail after the better part of a century had passed and he began to feel stiff and cold. The reaper was surely coming for him now. He could feel it in his old bones. His voice had finally cracked and he could no longer speak but could feel Ophius's presence close.
"Worry not my son. I will not allow you to perish that easily."
Suspend's ears weakly lifted as he heard the words escape from his God. What did he mean by that? He didn't have long to find out as he heard the low hum of soft chanting surrounding him. He couldn't quite make out the words but they were doing something to him, he just knew it. He tried to get up and shamble away but it was no use as his legs had grown week from months of laying faithfully in front of that damned door. His skin soon began to change, the beautiful black scales morphed into a sickly unsaturated green. He felt his once adorned horns lighten their load by dropping the gemstones and gold that had held fast for all these years. The gems that had been encrusted about his body were ripped from the skin and he felt something new grow in their place. The pain went as deep as his spirit and it caused such ferocious rage before dying down to extreme calm. When he opened his eyes he took note that he could see many different places at once and realized these spots were where his precious collected stones had been. Where his eyes had originally been were replaced with two large sapphires that Ophius himself placed during this transformation. Suspend did not speak a single word but the God knew his Guardian was pissed. This was the tradeoff for joining this family. Once Ophius left, Suspend continued to guard his post. He knew the wolf would have to perish or be overthrown sometime. Then he would make his grand escape into the abyss, never to be seen again He would wait as long as he needed. Time was now something Suspend had quite a bit of after all.
