Teriraset is a powerful woman to be sure. The Chief Priestess of Isis, and a member of the Sacred Order of the Royal Guardians of the Pharaoh, she holds the mystical power of the Millennium Necklace, and as such she is the Heart of Egypt, because she alone has the precious gifts of prophesy and foresight.
She has a strong sense of duty and a fierce loyalty to her country, which leads her to sacrifice her heart and pledge her virginity to her patron goddess. Not an easy decision, considering the Tauk isn’t quite as pure as she is. But she’s more than ready to serve her country and so she does not mourn the loss of her own happiness.
Even so, Teriraset isn’t without her own flaws. She’s arrogant, temperamental, secretive, unyielding, and combative. But she’s got a good head on her shoulders and an even better heart. She’s exactly what Egypt needs, and more importantly, she’s PRECISELY the girl Atem needs.
Enter Prince-turned-Pharaoh Atem. He’s sweet, funny, kind, strong, smart, caring, and he’s got a body that’s been chiseled by the Gods themselves. He’s everything Teriraset could want in a man. Not to mention he thinks Teri is gorgeous, intelligent, sexy, sweet, and resilient. Atem and Teriraset have known each other their entire lives and are now skirting around a very uneasy courtship. They’ve become each other’s best friends and are constantly flirting and spending their free time together. The only problem is that they can never be together in that special way. Teri has taken her vows, and she cannot break them… or can she?
And then it gets serious. When Atem’s father dies and leaves him Pharaoh, he leans on none other than the Lady Teriraset. She comforts him and guides him through his newfound duties, and he can’t thank her enough for all she’s done.
Late one night while they’re up talking, an unfamiliar urge overtakes Teriraset, and she decides to forsake her vows and be with the man she loves. And so the most amazing, intense, passionate night of their lives ensues.
Teriraset is consumed with grief from abandoning her vows and so she withdraws from Atem romantically, despite all his best efforts. But she’s thrown right back into the mix when she finds out she’s pregnant. And yet she still doesn’t have time to truly process anything that’s happened because she’s almost killed by the Thief King to avenge the slaughter at Kul Elna.
Needless to say that Atem’s depression worsens at almost losing the woman he loves, and Teri—thinking she’s on the brink of death—almost tells him about her pregnancy. But she thinks better of it once she realizes that if she tells him and does in fact perish, it’ll do Atem that much worse knowing that he will have lost his child, too.
Once she survives the attack, and as she recovers her strength, she continues to debate telling Atem about their unborn child. She knows that she owes him that knowledge, and yet to tell him would risk losing her visions and devastating her country. Moreover they’d be expected to marry, and as Chief Priestess and a Guardian she CAN’T marry.
So she hides her pregnancy by wearing loose clothing and using her injuries as an excuse for the more obvious symptoms. She even manages to keep her visions, and in fact they’re stronger than ever. She even knows she’s going to have a little girl.
Then comes the most dreadful night of Teri’s life. She goes into labor in her bedroom, alone, and has her baby, but she’s shocked when she finds it’s a stillborn. She has no choice but to bury the child, and that’s when Atem finds out.
She runs from him, terrified of what he’ll think, but he follows her and discovers the truth. To say that he’s heartbroken is a severe understatement. He was his best friend, the woman he loves, burying their child. Now he has to struggle with his own issues as he grieves the loss of his baby daughter and wrestles with the fact that Teriraset lied to him for more than nine months…
It took a long time, almost an entire year, but Atem did manage to repair his relationship with Teriraset. The fact that she spent her every waking moment begging his forgiveness was no small feat, either. The two had grown so close, in fact, that Atem quickly made things official and proposed to her in front of the entire court. The people were scandalized at first, until they realized that Teriraset had managed to keep her gifts and that their country was in no danger from the union.
And so it was that Atem and Teriraset married, and soon after welcomed a son. Teriraset loves her little family dearly, but she still can’t help thinking that it’s all incomplete. That one person is tragically missing…
