Toddy was a people watcher, quiet for the most part even as the individual poured their soul out before him faster than he could re-pour their drinks. He saw it all from his place behind the bar, the good and the bad. In that month alone he'd seen new love beginning, love reach it's highest peak and hearts break. Love wasn't the only thing he witnessed, but it was the one he often choose to focus on. He couldn't imagine his life if he let his thoughts linger to long on the grief, guilt and complete despair that would occasionally creep across the bar.
Toddy was a bartender, the place wasn't grand and wasn't one of the most popular places in town, the only sort of entertainment it had was an old jukebox in one corner that cycled through a selection of old eighties and nineties songs. It had been Toddy's first bar-tending job because it wasn't very popular and no one else was interested in a job that didn't offer enough tips to give a comfortable living. He'd planned a bit better and had money put away to live off of for roughly two years and by then his job brought in a bit more money though still not as much as he could make elsewhere. For now he was content, but he knew he would have to find something else soon.
Hard to believe a small town country boy had grown up to be a city barkeep, the only trace of his roots was the slight drawl on his voice when he spoke but he wasn't much of a city boy either. Despite his job he tended to keep more to himself when off the clock though he was very friendly and very social when doing his work. The bartender stood almost six foot tall with medium length strawberry blonde hair, locks that were usually pulled back into a tail at the back of his head when he was at work. Bright green eyes were playful and friendly with an easy smile, it was no wonder his customers felt so comfortable with him.
"Hey, can I get another?" Shaken from whatever thoughts may have been lingering in the back of his head the bartender glanced back to the short fellow perched on the stool before him. His customer was a handsome man with dark hair and eyes dressed in a suit, the tie loose around his neck tendering to a number of shots. Toddy immediately knew the man was nervous, he fidgeted one hand in his pocket and squirmed on the seat and got another shot before attempting to slip off the stool. Toddy leaned over the bar to catch the man by the arm and help him stand. Once he was sure the man was propped securely he moved around the bar and hooked the other's arm over his shoulder to help him outside.
Out on the curb Toddy waved down a cab nearby, it was familiar driver he noticed as he helped the man into the back seat, pausing as the dark man looked at him. "I don't know if I can do it Toddy.." He murmured, not completely drunk but still unstable enough that Toddy wasn't going to let him drive. Toddy knelt down a bit to be more eye-level with the man perched on the back seat and watched as he pulled the small ring box he'd been fiddling with out of his pocket. Toddy couldn't help but smile at the idea of why he'd been so nervous and he patted the man on the shoulder. "You can... and you will.. and you'll be all the happier for it." The man seemed satisfied with that and smiled before sinking into the back seat and spouting off his address to the driver as Toddy closed the door behind him.
Stepped back up onto the curb and watching the cab head off and turn the corner Toddy wondered if he'd ever know such a feeling. He'd never felt that sort of uncertainty or affectionate and it made him almost envious of the people that filled the barstools before him. "One day..." he mused quietly to himself. Until then, he would help, guide and support those who came to him for comfortable, companionship and a drink.
