Personality
Villanelle has a quiet, reserved demeanor, and is uneasy approaching others. Her social anxiety leads her to be a loner; her only companion was a white hedgehog for quite some time. This hedgehog is usually seen perched on her shoulder, and also acts as a coping device for Villanelle. During the day she wanders along the outskirts of small towns and villages, too fearful to go deeper into the populated areas. Her battered appearance usually warrants stares from passerbys, which only makes her feel more uncomfortable in public. During the night, she retreats to a small glade were she has a camping spot, with nothing more than a makeshift tent and any necessities she needs.
Attempts to approach Villanelle are responded to with hostility and flightiness. Her trust of people in general is non-existant, and it takes her a great deal of time to do so much as tolerate the presence of another individual. Although her primary goal is survival, she doesn't take more than she truly needs and lives a rather minimalistic lifestyle. Villanelle doesn't condone theievery, although she will take things that she is positive have been permanently abandoned. Despite the permanent injuries and scars she bears, Villanelle is quite capable of taking care of herself. Due to her past trauma, she has a severe fear of deep water, as well as being touched.
Appearance
As a dragon, Villanelle stands around 4'8" at the shoulder. Her lavender mane starts from the top of her head, goes down her back and tail, and ends on the underside of her tail. Tufts of fur are also along her jaw bone. Her body is covered with many scars, with most of them being on the left side of her body. She once had wings, but they were ripped off during the beatings she received. The only sign of her wings that remains are two abnormally long scars on her back, on both sides of her mane. Despite losing her ability to fly, she's learned to adapt without then. Two wavy horns point backwards on either side of her head, between her ears and on the sides of her mane, while a single horn points with a slight curve from the edge of her nose.
Stress, wear, and dark circles under her eyes cause Villanelle to look a lot older than she is, when she's really only in her mid 20's. The woman's hair is white with a faint lavender sheen to it. Her hair is cut short, with the exception of long bangs that are pulled around her head and tied in the back, as well as extended hair at the sides of her head. In her human form, her clothes are usually tattered, due to the fact that she takes whatever she can find in abandoned villages. Her preferred types of clothing are hunters tunics, as these give her the most mobility while hiding her numerous scars at the same time. Villanelle frequently carries around one of her hunting bows and several arrows whenever she's away from her campsite. In both animal and human forms, she has dark purple eyes and a black pearl necklace.
Backstory
Villanelle grew up in a small, mostly quiet village with her parents. For the most part she had a happy childhood, but her parents didn't have the best reputation among the population. Her father would constantly steal goods, only to frame other people, and her mother was shamed for being with such a man. Despite their reputations, Villanelle was very close with her parents. She felt especially close with her father, who would teach her practical skills when he wasn't being a conman. It was thanks to him that she learned the vital skills that she has now, such as hunting, tracking, navigation without a map, and other skills needed to fend for oneself in the wilderness. During her time period, it was extremely rare for a woman to have any sort of skill other than housekeeping, which led to Villanelle also being shunned by the general population of the village.
When guilt tripping and rumor spreading weren't enough to separate Villanelle's parents, one of the village elders went to an extreme. Since the elder's words were considered as much of a truth as a god's, he proclaimed Villanelle to be a witch, with the intent of forcing the father to flee and take his daughter with him. When she was accused of being a witch, Villanelle attempted to defend herself, however her attempts were in vain. At this point, the village was already enraged, and refused to listen to a word the woman had to say. Since her attempts to explain herself were futile, she was forced to flee for her life. Unfortunately, the village had captured her shortly after she tried to run away.
First she was beaten repeatedly, and the beatings resulted in several nasty scars that are still visible to this day, as well as a few broken bones at the time. She was able to survive the beatings, which only convinced the people within her village even more that she wasn't normal. After this, the villagers attempted to drown Villanelle in a nearby lake. She was assumed dead when she no longer struggled against the several people who were holding her underwater, and her body was then left in the lake.
By some miracle, Villanelle was able to survive this torture, and eventually floated towards the shore. She laid on the ground in exhaustion before finally mustering the strength to stand. She expected to be alone, however she had been watched the entire time by her mother, who had been too frightened by the whole ordeal in order to save her daughter. She knew that her daughter wouldn't be able to return home, so instead she left Vilanelle with a gift. This gift was a pearl necklace, which she cherishes dearly to this day. It's the only connection she has to her family, yet at the same time it causes her memories of her home to be even more painful.
The hardships that she's gone through have molded her into a stronger person. Although she often feels like her own world has fallen apart, she's able to hold things together for those who rely on her. She wouldn't even think to turn her back on somebody who has suffered more than she has, and holds these people especially close.
