She came from above in a gray spaceship, falling from the stars like an angel. She landed quietly in a small suburb where to boys sat on a roof just hanging out. The sight of her ship gave them both quite a scare and they rushed to meet the martian. They gasped in shock as she exited her small ship, looking much like you and I. A smile graced her white face and she bowed royally, humbled to make their acquaintance.

They could not speak, still in shock, as she reached out for their hands. She held them gently, as a flower would, and spoke directly into their minds. Hello, fine gentlemen, my name is Lucielle. I decided to go on an adventure and ended up here on your planet. May I stay with you? Wordlessly the tallest boy turned, now gripping her hand lightly in return, and began to lead her towards the door of his home. The shorter boy dropped her hand and stood for a moment there in the street before reality washed over him and he hurried after them.

Lucielle spoke to the tallest boy’s mother, in that strangely tranquil alien way that she did, and the woman couldn’t turn her away. The four wandered softly to the guest bedroom, following the mother, their minds swirling with questions. Lucielle asked how long she could stay, and the mother told her as long as she’d like. A bright smile spread across the girl’s face, wiping away the one it held previously.

The next day Lucielle and the mother went to the store, as a learning exercise. With eager coal eyes the rainbow-haired alien girl soaked up all the knowledge she could about life on Earth. She saw clothing and kitchen ware, toys and electronics, books and video games, children and animals. Her pure heart overflowed with joy as she danced down the aisles, giggling at this and that.

And then, when they got back to the house, Lucielle discovered art. The tall boy had stayed home to work on a school project, and the two found him in the living room in front of an easel. He smiled happily at Lucielle and motioned for her to come look. Excited, she pranced over to him and look a long look at his canvas. After a few long minutes, he began to paint, and she gasped.

Such a thing didn’t exist on her planet, and she was instantly in love. When the boy realized how much painting entranced her, he moved his painting to the floor and put up a fresh canvas. He handed her his palette and brush, her eyes sparkling. After a moment of confusion, she realized that she was supposed to try. And try she did.

The boy and his mother watched as Lucielle began to paint, for the very first time, and witnessed the birth of a masterpiece. It seemed to be a painting of her planet, as neither human could come close to naming anything in the image. But it was beautiful.

When Lucielle was finished, a fresh smile sparkling on her face, the sun was beginning to set. Follow me the boy said as he took her hand, her eyes glowing with curiosity as he lead her into the back yard. Immediately she saw the flowers. Dozens of rose bushes filled their back yard, and he could hear her joy in the moments before she dropped his hand to walk slowly towards them.

As the sun slid behind the horizon the two were bathed in a rainbow of color. Lucielle looked up, awe in her eyes, to take in the beautiful sight. All around them the roses danced in the light summer breeze, their colors transforming beneath the sunset. Minutes ticked past peacefully as the sun descended, bidding the world goodnight. They stayed outside, holding hands, until the moon rose high into the velvet sky.
