Elmira sat on the edge of the pits where the body had been lain to rest, silently watching the boundary between the bog and the green. She held a bunch of white calla lillies in her webbed hand.
Seinheild, she thought.
On the far side of the reclamation pits she could make out the figure. His pale skin and long black hair were just like the late Commander's, his mouth rimmed by the same boar's tusks, his face tattooed in veins of blue. Tall, muscular, the very image of virility. But those eyes, in their piercing blue, were not his.
In her mind this alien creature had, in the evening hours, snuck into the Commander's quarters, and, while he was bathing, put its hands around his neck and twisted. It had stolen his face and attempted to gain a place in her life that Seinheild had desired, but never obtained.
She remembered how the Commander had - He'd had his eyes on her for the longest time. Had this stranger seen? Why else would it take on this form?
She told no one. Not her mother, who cared for her as a queen ant would one of its countless worker-children, nor her half-brother, born into prestige. Not Mufinlaf, who would shrug it off.

Andolyrus, it had introduced itself. He brought her pure white lilies, plucked the strings in song, led her under the caves full of glow-worms that mimed the starry heavens. He waded with her through the saline pools. They exchanged secrets there, twining their bodies together. He told her how long he'd watched her, from afar. Protected her in her years of training, left gifts under the statue of the creator goddess. Seen how the Commander regarded her...
An alien, an alien. She knew it. A rare inhabitant of the sun, the Void, a being of light who'd stolen a body of flesh and bone.
In the months following Seinheild's death she had learned his life's story. She did not pity him, though they were strange and unfortunate circumstances. A brute child, separated from his mother because he was too beastly and frightful and born of bad blood. Raised by cultists, he'd escaped and climbed the Scapan ranks as a commander. The circumstances of his death were never disclosed, but she knew.
She sensed that the creature knew. When they were alone, Andolyrus would take on the form of a white dolphin with rows of sharp teeth. He'd nuzzle her with his beak. "Didn't you want this?" he seemed to say.
Well, she was happy now. Happier in all the years she'd prayed to the Goddess in the grotto that her body would grow strong and her senses keen and that one day, she'd find someone who would listen to the thoughts she kept inside her, heretical thoughts that festered and festered. The universe was so vast and yet she would only know a tiny fraction of it, here on Scapes. The time she spent on Jogaan, that planet of mysteries, however brief, was more precious to her than anything.
Andolyrus promised her she'd see the Galaxy one day. She hoped he wasn't lying.
