She goes to a play for the first time as a rich woman, unsupervised, which causes a stir. At the end of the play she stands up and claps really loud. She ends up being hit on by a lord. He takes her home, and they're sipping brandy, which she hates, but drinks it because she thinks that's what rich people do. She sees a huge painting of the sea in his home, and that sparks her desire for adventure.

Hayat was born in 1794. Her mother died of typhoid fever shortly after the family immigrated to England, and she was raised by her maternal aunt and uncle in utter poverty.

She learned to speak English with an upper-class London accent, as she learned to speak the language from the wealthy customers of the fancy hat shop she worked at.

Just before her seventeenth birthday, she inherited the entire estate of her paternal grandfather, who was a very wealthy man.

Uses her new-found wealth to immediately part ways with her family and purchase a ship and a mansion by the sea. She goes to many plays, and learns to read. She cannot write.

Hayat is also able to pursue painting almost full-time, having been an intent sketcher in the past. Takes on models to pose for her. Many of these models end up staying with her full-time as her lovers and inspiration.

She quickly becomes known for her love of the arts, lavish lifestyle and immense debt, as well as her numerous lovers and open bisexuality.
