Legend has it a violent wildfire left behind a vast swath of burnt earth and the smouldering remains of any creature unfortunate enough to be caught in the flames. Amongst the destruction, a tiny jollin kit was found. His coat was coloured like a dying ember and horns protruded from his skull, horns that seemed to smoulder like the coals themselves. He was declared a demonic beast, as were the beliefs at this ancient time, and ostracised from society.

To the utter surprise of everyone, a jollin mother whose young kit who had perished in the wildfire took care of the demon-kit, reasoning that there was no way the fire was his fault, and therefore he should not be punished for surviving it.

The legend was forgotten for years, resurfacing whenever a wildfire struck in any of the surrounding areas and changing a little each time. A thousand years passed, or more, and still the kit remained, although he had indeed grow into an adult. Karsten, as he was named, was not the cause of the fire but was instead born from it, much like a new phoenix would rise from the ashes of its predecessor's death.

With a temper to match his element, Karsten sparked numerous wildfires by sheer force of his furious outbursts. He loved the destruction caused: it was beautiful and deadly, and made him feel like a wrathful god with limitless, unchecked power. His only companion was a creature known as a firefox, which he unimaginatively named Ember. She did nothing to make him grow a conscious, and actually helped spread his fire by prancing around in it and scattering her namesake everywhere, igniting things that had not yet caught on fire.

It wasn't until early in his prime - the age that sprites cease to mature - that Karsten met another of his kind: a lightning sprite by the name of Lace.

It would be an understatement to say that their relationship was rocky in the beginning. It was only because of her that he began to feel guilt for his actions and their consequences. She had been blinded in one of the wildfires he had caused. He felt guilty, for some reason, and in the wake of this strange new emotion, he insisted on trying to take care of her. Lace hated him for his patronising attempts to help her, and it took him a long time to realise that she didn't need anyone to coddle her or help her in any way.

Once he did, though, they slowly became friends. This bond strengthened over time, and they are now very close. Lace, like him, has great destructive power, and together they seem to balance each other out by keeping each other in check and calm.

Karsten, however, has not told Lace that he caused the fire, as he is terrified he'll lose her if he does, and thus lose his only friend.

To Lace: Yeesh, okay, I'll leave you alone. You seem extra pissy today...

Lace, despite her sour nature, is Karsten's best friend and the one thing in this world that keeps him from going haywire and burning it to the ground when he gets angry or stressed. She is abrasive and snappy, but he doesn't mind. He has kept only one secret from her: that he's the one that started the fire which blinded her, and he never intends to tell her.
