Ketone stared down at her paper intently, the crayon in her hand flying across the blank sheet quickly but very precisely. She switched colors when necessary without pause. If anyone had cared to look closely they might’ve realized that something abnormal or supernatural was happening, but at the Veta Adoption Agency nobody cared very much.
The employees gave the children three meals a day and made sure they got the proper education and discipline, but past that they ignored the kids and spent most of their time at work watching TV. Finally the crayon stopped it’s dance around the page and Ketone snapped out of her trance. She looked down at what she’d drawn with mild curiosity. She had drawn people before, but they’d never been more than rough sketches; there’d never been this amount of detail.
She stared at the face of a light-purple colored ferret with pretty sky blue eyes and a warm smile. He had his dark lilac hair arranged peculiarly, in a variation of a fauxhawk that left some hair hanging down over his right eye. Small wings sprouted from his back, and he wore a fancy black coat over a thinner, striped blue hoodie. “Who are you?†Ketone mused to herself, staring at the stranger on the page who she, for some reason, felt an attachment to. “And what role do you play in my future?†When Ketone entered trances and drew, she seemed to always draw some fragment of the future. She certainly didn’t resent her power, but it frustrated her at the same time; she couldn’t remember the first ten years of her life and sometimes just wished she could draw the past.
As Ketone sat musing over the attractive man she’d drawn, the door opened and a cold gust of air cut through the warmth of the room, causing her look up. She stared, dumbfounded as the ferret she had drawn minutes ago walked through the door wearing the exact outfit he had in the picture. She sat torn for a moment between going up to the man to talk to him and sitting and letting fate take it’s course. In the end she decided that after three years of hoping fate would guide her to a nice, loving family she was going to finally take action.
Ketone held the drawing behind her back as she made her way across the room to the stranger.
“Ahem,†she said clearing her throat. “I believe we’re supposed to meet.†The man had a look of utter confusion on his face, probably weighing the probability that this girl was actually crazy.
“What makes you think that?†he asked. Ketone pulled the drawing out and held it out in front of her. The ferret stared at it flabbergasted for a moment, glancing from the picture to the small girl.
“I... well.. wow,†he finally managed to say. “Have you seen me before somewhere else? This is the first time I’ve volunteered at this adoption agency.â€
“Nope,†replied Ketone.
That might just scare him off though, she worried. Finally she took a deep breath and took a leap of faith. “Sometimes I draw the future.†Seconds seemed to creep by as Tisky just stared at her. Finally, much to her relief he spoke. “I believe you. I can’t quite explain it but I have a feeling in my gut that you’re telling the truth and I was meant to meet you. My name's Tisky by the way. You know... I have some extra room in my house if you’d like to come stay with me. I can’t imagine it’s nice living here.â€
“I’d like that,†Ketone replied with a grin. I’d like that a lot.
