Viewing Shadowglen

Shadowglen

Shadowglen (formerly Shadowglen Graveyard) occupies the eastern half of the central continent of Subeta bordered by the Darkside to the west. Dense forests surround the small village area littered with headstones and unmarked graves as local custom is to bury the dead anywhere one can find a suitable plot of land. The name for the area comes from a boyization of the Tehb word "skedhu" meaning "looking glass."

People

Shadowglen is home to various shadows, the Unliving, and the Tehb people, a hornless cousin of the Ji-Meneb of Darkside. Historically, there was also a Human colony, but many of these and some Tehb have emmigrated to Centropolis and settled in a neighborhood called Little Shadowveria. These often return to pay their respects to the dead, especially during Morostide.

Government

Shadowglen is a mostly compliant colony of Sebastian Phoenix and Centropolis. The Tehb, being a quiet and unambitious people, feel no need to reach out for an office of politics, and so their ambassadors are selected by popular nomination. The Rainsong family has held this office for several generations likely because the name is familiar to everyone and is put in the nomination pool by default.

Region

Supernatural and magical elements-- although present in all of Subeta-- are found in abundance in Shadowglen and have a profound effect on those who die or are buried in its soil shortly after death. Unlike the viruses that affected and mutated those that became the Unliving, these magical elements found in the earth do not reanimate or even alter living bodies. Instead, these elements solely act as a mirror reflecting the consciousness and self-awareness of those who have died. Although this phenomenon can occur at any time of day, the reflections are especially visible at night and more so during a particular moon cycle during Morostide. These reflections (or "shadows" as they are often called) are so accurate that many who come to pay respects to a grave may be tempted to bring their loved one home with them, however the concentration of these supernatural and magical elements are not high enough outside of the region to keep the shadow accurate. When removed from the vicinity, these become ghostlies or harvesters depending on a person's character in life. Interestingly, while the personality remains the same, the accuracy of the reflection is lost forever-- returning a ghostly or harvester to Shadowglen will not return a shadow to its original form-- and so many of these have been returned to Shadowglen and abandoned, becoming a bitter and dangerous threat to those wandering the forests unaware of their surroundings. Seeking to be at rest once more, these feral ghostlies and harvesters will absorb themselves into a humanoid host resembling their past selves. These attempts are unsuccessful and do not result in possession but could cause serious magic poisoning to the host if not treated quickly.
