Shadowglen

Shadowglen occupies the eastern half of Subeta's southern continent, bordered by the Darkside to the west. Dense forest surrounds and separates a system of small villages, as well as vast swaths of land littered with headstones and unmarked graves. Shadowglen is named after Fort Shadowglen, a former human stronghold, which in turn took its name from a corruption of the Tebh word skedhu, "looking glass".

Due to the chaotic magical energies of the area, the forests grow wildly and must be stopped from reclaiming the graveyards and villages with constant vigilance and effort. Additionally, the creatures that call the dense, dark woodlands home are often mutated by magic, becoming unfathomable eldritch monstrosities. The woods of Shadowglen are featured prominently in popular fiction, as well as the work of folklorists and cryptozoologists.

People

The traditional group native to Shadowglen are the Tehb, allegedly a hornless off-shoot of the Ji-Meneb people of the neighboring Darkside. A large region, Shadowglen is home to a variety of ethnic groups that make up the "Tehb People". This, combined with their history of intermarriage with humans and the Ji-Meneb, mean that their appearance can be highly variable and not easily identifiable. Tehb is considered to be the smallest of all Subetan ethnic groups, and as a result much of their traditional culture has been lost.

More recently, as the result of global pandemic, Shadowglen has become the home of the Unliving. These are citizens of various regions and races that died while under the effects of the global infection, and were awakened as undead. The Unliving generally do not remember the details of their life among the living, and have taken up residence in the massive network of caves that wind below the unforgiving terrain.

Famous Tehb (or confirmed mixed-race Tehb) Subetans include Jaxon Skelly, Connor Rainsong, and Elwood.

Government

Shadowglen is an independent state, once a mostly-compliant colony of Centropolis that was released under its own power when the terrain was determined to be too inhospitable. They are currently a member of the Subetan Council, and their ambassadors are elected through popular nomination. The Rainsong family has held this office for several generations, likely because the traditional surname Rainsong is familiar to the native people.

While not formally recognized by the governments of the surface, the Unliving Underground has their own system of representation following a multi-party political system. These parties represent different Unliving interests, and are each led by one person campaigning for the position of Chancellor. Currently the Underground is politically divided, and so is run by an unconventional two Chancellor team. Skitters, representing a moderate party, and Ecks, representing a revolutionist party, rarely agree on subjects, but are at least united in doing what they believe is best for their people.

Region

Supernatural and magical elements, although present in all of Subeta, are found in abundance in Shadowglen and have a profound effect on those who die there, or are buried in its soil shortly after death. The consciousness of those that have died are reflected by this paranormal energy, causing the appearance of creatures that are known by many names - shadows, echoes, spirits, or ghosts. While these spirits may appear at any time of day, they are especially prevalent at night, and more so during a particular cycle of the moon that occurs surrounding the holiday of Morostide.

These spirits have many different levels of self-awareness. While some may appear to be fully aware citizens of the area, fulfilling their daily life, others behave more like traditional ghosts, seeking to solve some unfinished business, or endlessly living out the last few moments of their life. While research has been conducted in this area, no correlation has yet been found to explain this phenomenon.
