Montre

(MAWN-trah)

The montre is one of the most well-known species in Subeta, and yet are one of the most mysterious. A stoic creature, montre are rarely seen displaying emotion, although catching one smiling is considered to be good luck. Likewise, however, catching one growling means you best turn and run, angering a montre is never a good idea! Despite their prevalence in Subetan lore, spotting an entire montre can actually be quite difficult - you are much more likely to spot a glimpse of a tail bauble, the tip of a wing or a twitch of an ear before they seem to disappear into their surroundings.

Montre are found densely throughout Subeta's forests, where they live in large matriarchal packs, lead by the largest, strongest, and most fertile female. Although they form strong familial ties, it is common for a group of young montre to leave their packs, explore the world, and start a pack of their own. Generally there is little aggression between montre packs, although a mother with young is not to be trifled with, and the matriarchal leaders will get into scuffles to protect their packmates. They are known for their lanky legs and thick coats, which will often change colors throughout the seasons to help them better blend into their environment. They stand slightly above knee-height and weigh from 30-40 lbs (13.6-18.1 kgs), although some montre will stay small throughout their lifetime. Their wings, while beautiful, are purely ornamental, and there are no officially recorded sightings of montre that can actually fly, although several Subetans will claim to have witnessed such a thing.

Montre were once believed to be carnivorous, and they feed primarily on small rodents and birds. It has since been discovered that montre will actually forage for berries as well, and it is common to see montre pups with berry-stained faces! Perhaps the largest mystery of the montre is their tails, which are decorated with homemade beads, often made out of rock and bone, as well as feathers. It is believed the feathers are passed on from parents to their young, but the exact making of these baubles in the wild has never been observed. Montre are generally not good candidates for human companionship; they pine away from loneliness away from their social pack settings, and being kept as pets can make them restless, aggressive, and unpredictable.
