Mori & Nori

Mori & Nori (MAWR-ee, NAWR-ee)

Biography

Mono Ri was born to a modest family from Veta Lake. Although her close family were quite settled, Mono learned of other individuals from the Ri lineage that had travelled far and wide in search of adventure and strange treasures.

As a child, Mono Ri discovered a chunk of stone that appeared to have broken off of some larger structure. It was embellished with a carefully chipped and polished disc, surrounded by billowing swirls resembling a sun’s corona. As Mono picked up the artifact she felt a blinding light and a dark power flow through her, causing her to collapse from the conflict of both energies. Confiding in The Oracle, Mono learned that there were more pieces of the stone puzzle to be found, and decided that she would search for them.

From that day on, her general mood and interests outside of artifact-hunting changed drastically, sometimes even from week to week. She didn’t always remember details in between projects. Much of her struggle was dismissed as typical teenage behavior, and Mono didn’t connect it with the scattered artifacts she was still collecting. Mono’s family granted Mono her requests to visit the places her relatives had once adventured to and, on her trips Mono risked the ire of Maleria in order to take a rock from the edge of the dark goddess’s abode, and the scandalized outrage of Shinwa to remove a tile from the sacred temple. She brought her treasures back and added them to the statue that was taking shape.

On her eighteenth birthday, Mono Ri felt that her construction was almost complete - save for the initial disc which she had held onto until now. Adding this last piece, Mono once again felt the powers of darkness and radiance rushing through her - and then into the statue. It stirred to life, becoming flesh and bone and magic as Mono Ri fled, free from its hold. It was Mori who was active at first, delighting in the overcast night and the sound of the crickets. She coaxed spirits from the wind and made them hers. But when dawn came, they melted away as Nori emerged to face the sun.

And so it has been. Mono, grown now, lives with the Ri family between frequent travels. She refuses to interact with Mori and Nori alike, and tries to stay out of the public eye. After consulting with the Oracle, Mono's family were informed that Mono Ri is no longer influenced by either magic.

Mori and Nori live now in Veta Lake, alternating as the sun and the night take turns in the sky. They share uneasily, not always getting along or understanding each other, but having some influence over each other. Neither could be described as fully ‘good’ or ‘bad’, and they are in fact united by the same questions. Were they truly made by Mono Ri, and could they be unmade? Where did the stone disc that finished their statue come from?

They continue to send Subetans out on quests for items to replenish their magic or suit their interests…or possibly suit the whims of those powerful beings that have imbued them with a little of their own magics.
