Dexter
1/25/05 - 5/5/16
As time went on, his big dog (he eventually found out her name was Destiny) noticed that he got very afraid and upset when it was storming loudly. He would shake and hide. Of course this is sometimes the way when you have a small dog because the noises are always louder to smaller ears. This was dangerous if he was outside when the thunder started because he only wanted to get away from the loud booming noise and she would have to chase him. But his big dog would just bring him and cuddle until the storm passed. This also happened with other loud noises like fireworks and motorcycles. But Destiny continued to try and show him that he was safe when he was with her. And even though she sometimes had to give him something to calm him down, things were okay for a very long time. Dexter kept her company when she was lonely and she did the same for the puppy. He grew to a big 16 lbs!
Eventually, his big dog moved back to her hometown and Dexter got something new! He had a fenced in yard where he could run around all he wanted. He still liked walks with Destiny, but even when she was not home he could go outside and sit in the sun. He could run through the grass and dance around the flowers like a bee looking for pollen. Life was great! There was still that lingering problem of loud noises. 11 years passed and Dexter was still going strong. There had been so many changes but Dexter still had his big dog. They had also gained two new hairless dogs--one was bigger than Destiny and had a lower rumbly voice and the other was closer to Dexter's size. The smaller one was kind of annoying but he was still a happy dog and would let her pull on his ear (just not TOO hard) and pet him. He could see that his big dog was very happy with her new big dogs and that made him happy.
But how to get away from those loud booming noises? He had tried in the past to let Destiny know that he was just trying to run from the noises and he would be back, but she would always get either scared or mad and make him go back into the house. Sometimes he would find ways out of the back fence so as to not bother her. One day, he was so scared that he actually broke through part of the fence and scattered splintered wood everywhere. He ran and ran and then looked around. He had no idea where he was and his big dog was not there to scoop him back up. He grew frantic and just kept running hoping that he would find his way back home...
His big dog received a call that day that she had been dreading for 11 years. He did not return home that day, at least not as he had done many times before. And she was not able to cuddle him anymore. She placed him gently under one of his favorite trees in the back wrapped snug in his blanket. Hopefully the blanket will help so that he can finally get away from the loud sounds that he would always run from. Hold tight to your little furbabies and let them know that they are loved. And I hope you have many many years of love returned. A puppy's love is unconditional and forever.
