My existence wasn't well thought out or planned at all. I just remember, I guess, waking up and seeing the Devil checking out his work. I wasn't the first demon and I certainly wasn't gonna be the last. Soon after I was given my name, Selvenir. A name that I didn't get used to hearing for very long. Despite how Hell is, I guess I was the only demon that had a conscience. And that conscience is what started to get me into trouble. The pathways in Hell are extremely crowded and I often found myself apologizing to everyone. Which, in turn, only got me either stares or sneers. I wasn't like everyone else and I knew that. Most demons are cruel, unapologetic, and rude. That just wasn't me. The imps especially let me know how different I was. Way too many times they tormented me.

It was only a few days of my existence when the Devil summoned me. I had no idea where I was, it was a part of Hell I'd never been to. I remember asking why he wanted me there and he just bluntly said, "You're worthless". Now, I had never been told that and so I just looked at him in confusion. So, he went on, "Hundreds of thousands of damn demons and you are the only one, kind. I won't fucking have it!" He started saying some things and not long after, my wings had intricate gold patterns on them, I could feel them being there and I looked at them. They were, of course, very pretty, but being where I was, I didn't dare comment. "Mammon." Whatever that meant had me look at my failure of a creator. "That is your new name, you're a Sin now. Let's see if that will make you remember just what you are." I'd heard of the Sins before, all demons are capable of being driven by them, but I had a feeling this was so much more. I found out that when I have a feeling like that, I'm right.

Being a Sin meant I was basically the devil's puppet. Every Sin has a quota to fill and it depends on our unique sin quality. I was Mammon, or greed. A had a whole circle of Hell I was meant to keep in order as well as going to the surface world and causing mortals to be filled with, you guessed it, greed. The surface world is so much better than what we have in Hell and I prefer it there. So much so, that I would wait until the last couple of days to finish my quota. Hell is just fire, pain, and, well, depression. The surface was full of new scents, colors, sounds, and experiences. Now, I know what you're probably assuming and no, I wasn't just a demon exploring the world. We can all shape shift. We choose an animal before we leave Hell and, as far as I know, that's the animal we're stuck with. I chose a black-backed jackal for my look. Nocturnal, sly, and well.. not to brag, but I looked good. Anyway, that was what I looked liked using my borrowed Sin powers to make mortals want things. Casinos were a great place to start, although after a while I began to realize that mortals are greedy enough. I never understood why I had to force them to be greedier still. It was probably my third or fourth month with slacking off when the Devil had us in the Sin meeting and things changed for me. He realized I was turning in my quota later and later and he didn't like it, so he stacked about 75 million more onto my record. That wasn't going to be easy.

I went back to the surface world and I'd realized that I'd been having this... itch lately. I don't remember having it in the beginning or when I was a regular demon, but I remember wanting things like shiny stuff. Coins, jewels, and anything that sparkled. I remember finding my way in possession of a ship... definitely borrowed it. Pirates always had that stuff and what better way to get it then, to become a pirate myself. I'm not saying I was the best pirate, but I definitely could hold my own with a sword and pistol. It was around this time that I really did need to figure out a surface name. I mulled over my options and eventually came across the name Croix in a book. I looked over the meaning, which of course was cross. Devil wouldn't like that if he found out, but I thought it fit for the "pure" demon that I was and of course I needed a last name so Edmonds it was which meant "wealthy defender". The middle name didn't show up until a bit later, but I chose Alexander since it meant "protector of man". Devil was legit going to kick my ass for all of that. My entire name went against just about everything my creator stood for. I didn't care of course and within no time I was Captain of the The Golden Jewel. I slowly had gained a crew and there were many raids we went on. Of course, being thrown back into Hell at the end of the month was a pain. I had a pretty good first mate though and he'd run things when I was gone. Only problem was when I'd pop back into the surface world, well, the ship wasn't there so I'd end up in the middle of the freakin' ocean. Guess that'd freak most people out, but I had a pretty good idea of where the ship was so late at night I'd just go into my demon form and fly to get back on the ship. Things were going great until the day we ended up in the biggest pirate brawl of the century. While the crew and I did everything we could, we were just outmatched. Half the crew died in the onslaught and the rest ended up under a new captain. I felt completely responsible for it, but the worse part was all of the treasure ended up in Davy Jones' locker. I know, people died and I was worried about the coins and gems and I know that was wrong. I just... couldn't help it.

My tally for souls of greed just kept increasing year after year and every year I would meet the quota, even though it was getting really difficult. I guess I was getting desperate for the souls, because I found myself trying to use my powers one day and they just wouldn't work. The person in question was reading, although what, I couldn't tell. They turned the page, "You can't seriously be trying to do that right? That's not going to work on me." I couldn't understand, no mortal was ever unable to fall for the Sin synthesis. "Why not?" I questioned. They then flipped to another page, "I'm a vampire." That didn't make sense as I'd used it on multiple vampires in the past. "Vampires are still able to be put into a trance." I remember saying that firmly. They then skimmed down the page, "Not this one." So I made my way closer and tried to take a look at that book, "Why not?" They closed the book and said coolly, "I'm no ordinary vampire." I remember just giving up at that point and moving onto other more willing people to put under the influence of greed. It wasn't long after that, that said vampire showed back up to watch.

That was the day I met my first and only friend at the time. His name was JC, but I preferred calling him Jace, which he didn't seem to mind. Said he could help with my quota and he did. Instead of scrambling at the end of the month to meet the requirement, he could just use his powers. He demonstrated that to me, but I did warn him to not get the whole quota filled. He did question why and I explained that he wouldn't be able to see me again until next month if it was done all at once. So he split it up, so many a week. This would make it to where I wasn't waiting until the end of the month for everything and I could continue to stay on the surface until I was ripped back to Hell.

Jace continued to stick around and my love of the finer things in life just kept getting worse. I remember it was late one night when I brought up the idea of us turning into outlaws. He just looked at me and mentioned that he really wasn't one for organization. I responded back with that I would take care of it. That's how we started our own little outlaw gang back then. Granted, it was just the two of us, but it was fun. So much cattle rustling, train robberies, and bank robberies. Banks were, of course, my favorite. All of the different coins clinking together just filled my inner greed more and more. We did have a safe house for storing all of it too. I would be concerned that we'd get caught, but really I don't think anyone would catch a vampire and a demon duo. Even if we did get caught, Jace could take us elsewhere. I mean, I could always take myself back to Hell, but I really only wanted to use that as a last resort. We lived the good life and even got our own horses as time went on. Of course, much like the days of being a pirate and looting, the days as desperadoes ended too.

We still had our horses for many years, but they eventually left our lives too. That really tore Jace up. I normally wasn't meant to use my powers for anything apart from my job as a Sin, but I didn't like seeing Jace that upset. So, I used my shadow manipulation to conjure up a puppy for him. I didn't know if Jace was just being funny or if he meant it genuinely, but he named them Sinni. They were basically inseparable. Sinni behaved just like a real dog would and required care and attention which Jace was more than happy to provide. Sinni was a real fast learner as well, not sure if that was due to being a shadow dog or from Jace being so well with animals; since we both could completely understand them.

It didn't take long for that nagging at my heart to start in again and I knew it wasn't going to go away. I tried for years to just get little things here and there to sate it. Unfortunately, that just wasn't cutting it. My time in Hell over the centuries wasn't helping either. Jace found me muttering to myself in demoniac and I, by then, knew he'd somehow picked up on it. He provided the encouragement that I needed. I said, "We're starting up an underground operation." He did question what I meant by that and I remember saying, "Mafia style". This was the last thing I could do to feel like I was in charge of my own life. Jace and I basically started up our operations just like we did when we were outlaws. Heh, guess we never really changed. It was just the two of us for a bit, but we slowly brought new people in. Spencer a.k.a. Brick, was our new powerhouse. Found him when I was attending an MMA fight. Watching of course, I wasn't much for getting into the ring obviously. His sponsors dropped him and he was pretty beat up when I spoke to him. I asked him to join Jace and I and he agreed, although a bit hesitantly. Wasn't too long after that, that I met Monty or Snipes. He was just some kid at the time who was supposed to be getting into code and stuff for some guys. Guess they didn't like the outcome because when I found him he was a bit of a mess himself, unsure how to pay his rent at the time. I invited him into the gang too as our own lock-pick and code hacker. That was the original family. Jace knew some people, friends of his, that sold weed. So, I decided we'd not sell that since they needed food too. Plus Jace said the main guy running it was taking people in and I can respect a guy like that. We also eventually cut a deal with the legit underground. Selling bodies we couldn't dispose of to the zombies. Our ranks grew and grew as time went on.

It was around that time that there was a shift in how things went down in Hell. I wasn't being dragged away anymore and I couldn't figure it out. Like I said, I normally hated going there, but I was curious. From what I could gather, a child had bested the Devil. Which was just fine and dandy to me. Eventually I had my own estate, a mansion at that. I finally felt somewhat free and unlike what happened with my ship, nothing was going to happen to my house. I have guards from my own crew, making sure of that. Things were going great and I didn't want it to change.

Jace had invited me over to his and his husband, Zacharie's house a few years later. I'd met his husband once before, briefly, at work. This was different though, a lot different. Jace always was one for putting people on the spot. I knew from all the times Jace had talked about him that the guy used to be pretty religious, granted if you're gonna marry a vampire that would have to change. Stuff got a bit awkward due to Jace and I had to explain my demon heritage. Which, really wasn't a good idea. I don't speak his language, but I know whatever he was saying wasn't good. Then, to top it all off, Jace has the bright idea to invite his step-daughter-in-law over. Jace has talked about her quite a bit, but it didn't click until she got there. I was meeting my savior. I explained that she was royalty where I was from and a princess. She really didn't realize what all she had done for me or for everyone else in Hell. She asked if I wanted to see the Devil's throne and I was still petrified of the Devil, but I didn't want to disrespect her, so I agreed. It was pretty cool getting to see how things were for her.

A while later I found out I have a brother, well, sorta. Normal demons are created by the Devil and that was the case here too, with Damien. It took a while, but we actually were Sins at the same time for a bit there. After a whole ordeal involving Grymm's brother, Aed and his wife Zay, Damien was back to being a "regular" demon. He didn't like it much in Hell either so I decided to let him stay with me. Honestly, the mansion was quiet before he got there. Still is, for the most part, but it's really nice to have someone to talk to that completely understands. I know what I went through was nothing like what he did. I convinced him to go to therapy because there was only so much I could do and I knew they would know better. I think things are getting easier for him, but I still worry about him a lot.

While all of that was going on, Grymm had somehow found out where I worked and wanted to visit me. She did, a few times. It took a bit, and a whole hell of a lot of courage, which JC almost screwed up, but we've kinda been a thing now for a while. Her brother tried to help and I guess whatever he was talking about did help, sorta. Anyway, my beautiful princess from Hell figured out how to get my soul from the Devil and technically she's in charge of us Sins now, but she doesn't want that. She only wanted to free me from the Devil completely and I'm just even more grateful to her now. It took a long time, but I think I finally found that last piece that needed clicked into place to sate that greed of mine.
